Hi all

I am going to be having my Ng tube removed and replaced with a Peg.

I feed at night so have to sleep proped up.  Will i still have to be proped up at night with the Peg, or will i be able to lay down normally, as the tube will be straight into my stomach ?

Thank you

Cat x

  • You can lie down normally once it’s settled.

  • Thanks Dani,

How long does that take roughly ?

  • Folk say a week or so. But just do try gently when you are home. You might be comfortable surrounded by soft pillows.
    How are you Cat? Hugs

  • Hi Catmeral

I have been feeding via PEG since December.  I needed to be propped up to begin with and brought a V shaped pillow for this purpose.  As  my body got used to the PEG I managed to sleep lower and lower until I managed to sleep flat.

I have now moved off night feeding for various reasons but not due to sleep position.

    Hope this helps

    Good luck

  • Thanks Dani,

I've been propped up since about january, so it'll take a while to 'lower' myself and get used to it. I already have some snuggly pillows & cushions.. i don't want to get up in the morning, they're so cosey !!

I asked this because i had the work bench taken ot of my van and replaced with a seat / bed and am in the middle of sorting that. So i'll order some more cosy feather cushions etc !

To be honest, i've not been good. I've been in so much pain for the last couple of months { that's why i've not been on here too much} But my team are trying to sort it for me. I had a CT scan last week and that apparently is good, if i'm right the Radiotherapy has 'contained'  the cancer and it hasn't spread. I'm seeing my Oncologist next week, he's going to assess me to see if i can have a dose of chemo that may help with the pain. I'm not sure which chemo it is, but apparently it's good for my type of cancer.

I'm also being seen by the local hospice nurse, who has given me morphine patches.

My mum passed a little while ago, so it's all been a bit blaaahhh. I'm going to see Francis Rossi from Quo next week & Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top in june to giving myself a boost and something to look forward to, so slowely picking myself.up !

    Hope your doing well

  • Thanks Mellabs

I have a V pillow, but could never get on with it, i have large cusions and pillows now, too cosey !!

I have to admit it will be nice to be able to lay down again to sleep, & i know it'll take a while to get used to. As you say, a gradual process.

I am really not looking forward to having the PEG fitted, it would be nice if they knocked you out to do it. But it will be so nice not having the NG stuck to my face & dangling anymore !

I'm given to understand that you can put more down a PEG, than a NG, as the tube is a bit bigger ??

    Hope your well.

  • Hey Cat. I hope you get the pain fixed a bit better. Keep pushing.
ZZ top! Brings back a few memories. Those were the days.

Rick Parfitt was a neighbour when I lived in Teddington. I used to see him in the local pub and in Pizza Express with the family.
I hope you enjoy the gigs

    More hugs xx

  • I thought that too, but the dietician has advised me not to put anything but my nutrition drinks down the tube. And certainly nothing that originates from a powder.  Personally I can't see the point of putting tea, coffee etc down it as I can't taste it anyway.  Although I have been tempted to sneak a syringe of wine down it Wink

  • Good evening Cat, i was only fed by the pump in the hospital, i think i was propped up a bit as its more comfortable. Other than that i use a syringe 3 times a day which i mainly do standing up but have done it sitting down in a car when I'm out and about. I hope you can find a comfortable position to have your feed administered. All the best, take care.

  • I thought that Mellabs, as there may come a time in the future when i'm not able to have a cup of coffee etc, and yes i won't be able to taste it. But on a cold day it's nice to have something warm in your stomach.
