Hi

My husband is having session 35 of radiotherapy tomorrow which is his last one.  It has been a long journey to get to this point.  Once he got the diagnosis (which took nearly 2 yrs) and the oncology department were involved things moved very quickly.  We have been told on several occasions that 3 months after his treatment finishes he will have another CAT scan then we will be called in to discuss the results but today we found out that this might not happen.

i would like to hear from anybody else that has had similar treatment and what happened when the treatment finished

thank you

  • Good evening Haigh, I never had any follow-up scans after my operations or treatments but I know of some who do get follow-up scans, if you have been told your husband would get a scan then I would bring it up with your consultant especially if it gives you and your husband peace of mind. A lot also depends on which area you had the treatment in and which hospital/consultant. I think I should have pushed for follow-up scans but I was a bit green back then but have learned and read a lot since my time on here ( 10 years +) and think the option should be there. I'm sure you will get more replies a bit later, wishing you all the best, take care.

  • Hi Haigh.
Good to hear your husband is nearly through. Time to rest and heal.
The usual follow up involves close monitoring for the first two years. I was seen every six weeks for the first six months then every three months till the end of year two.
The guidelines are either an MRI or  a whole body PET/CT at 12-16 weeks.
I would be insisting on at least an MRI. Do clarify exactly what your husbands oncologist actually meant.
Where was your husbands cancer, by the way. That might make a difference in follow up

    Best wishes

  • Hi I would query why no follow up pet ct scan or mri scan ti determine that treatment is successful. Is he on a trial by chance ?
Well done on last day if treatment. The next few weeks could still be diff as treatment continues to work. Rest and recuperation is what’s needed. As Dani says where was your husband’s treatment exactly mine was tonsil with seven affected lymph nodes. I was seen every 6-8 weeks in first year am now due my last check  up after almost 5 years. Years 2-3 every 3 months and kast 2 every 6 months I have a scope on each occasion.

Ah...I've just found your other post in the larynx cancer group. Yes I definitely think you should clarify the situation with the doctors

  • I had the same cancer. I had an MRI scan 9 weeks post treatment and am on 6 week checks.  I've had a couple of scares which has resulted in 2 further MRIs. Things really seem to vary depending on where you are.  I think I might insist on a MRI scan  it the only real way they can see what's happened.

  • Hi

12 days since treatment finished, neck / throat very sore, loss of appetite no interest in eating, lethargic . I am managing to get him to eat a little plus 3 ensure drinks.  Spoke to hospital last week as neck weeping and coughed up little blood ( light red)  a couple times.  They assured us all symptoms are normal neck will scab over a couple of times then begin to heal and providing he is not coughing blood every time he coughs it’s normal and continue with pain killers.  He has lost more weight and needs to eat but at the moment he is finding it very difficult.  The consultant is due to call next week we have started to write a list of questions, such a worrying time

  • All reads as very familiar.  It's a long old journey. I would say, listen to your body, rest, sleep and be kind to yourself. You have a long journey ahead, no shortcuts!!!  I am 5 months post treatment still not eating, nasty mouth, constantly freezing, lost over 3 stone, pump feeding but, I do feel a lot better in myself and that's made a huge difference.  It is worrying and its very scary for everybody but I did find having a read through this site made me realise you are not alone and, many people have experienced the same often unpleasant effects of treatment. I went to see a kinesiologist who I found to be great.  I am quite sure she put my body back together. She said it's your whole body that's been battered, your whole body needs a reset and help.  I do think it has helped, its a holistic practice but works with science.  Could be worth a look into.

My target is a bacon and tomato sandwich, fish and chips, cheese on toast, a roast dinner and a big salad with steak!!!!!    lol.  X

I had acupuncture for saliva which helped a great deal and  my practitioner said the same thing, that my whole body needed help. I used to get needles in other bits of me (apart from the ears and fingers for saliva) depending on what she and I could feel.

Steak ( salad again for me that’s still difficult especially lettuce and tomatoes ) bacon sandwich. You’ll getbthere slowly it’s a case of adapting.
