Hi all, I’m new to all of this. My dad found out that he has cancer in the salivary gland. He was referred pretty quick for MRI, CT scan and ultra sound to see if it has spread further. Today the consultant phoned him and has asked if he can go and see him a week Thursday and to bring someone along with him, they also said that he will be there most of the day.
Is this normal? What does it mean? I’m so worried, I feel like it’s going to be terrible news
Hi try not to read too much into the consultants call. It’s always better if we have someone’ with us at consultationsI had my hubby and daughter as I knew me and hubby would miss something so Nicola transcribed the meeting. It could well be if your dads having radiotherapy they may do the ct planning and mask making next Thursday prior to treatment starting. So what with consultation and planning it could take a fair few hours. I am thinking if when my mask and planning was done along with blood tests for chemo then looking around the chemo snd radiotherapy suites. So just try to keep busy and not think too many thoughts. If he had been given a dedicated cancer or Macmillian nurse he could always ring and ask for more info.
hope thus helps. Hazel

Good evening Concerned daughter, it's not always bad news that he has been asked to go in to see his consultant next Thursday sometimes it's just to discuss what they plan to do and what the scans are showing, maybe they want to do more tests, biopsies etc, i remember when i went for my first meeting with my consultant and i did not even know i had cancer but as soon as he saw me he told me he was 99% a cancerous tumour and looked aggressive and fast-moving so i spent the rest of the day having biopsies etc done so he could act a.s.a.p with the surgery and treatment although I still had to wait for about a month to get a date for the surgery. It's always best if the person goes in with someone mainly for reassurance, company, and someone to also listen to what the consultant has to say as it can be a lot to take in. In a way it's good news they want to see him quickly as waiting is one of the worst parts of dealing with cancer. Try not to think it of being terrible news i know its not easy as we all go into panic and worry mode, i had one of my saliva glands removed during my first operation although the main tumour was in the floor of the mouth they removed it as it looked suspect along with some lymph nodes. I hope it all goes ok next Thursday , take care,
Chris x
Thank you, that’s put my mind at rest at the moment, Iv never had anyone close to me that’s been diagnosed with cancer so it’s really hard to deal with at the moment, it’s the not knowing what’s going on while we wait for the results of the further tests.
Thanks again
Thank you, my main worry is that it has spread further than the salivary gland, and that’s what they want to talk to him about. But I’m trying to stay positive. I’m glad that I’m able to go with him as like you said it’s a lot to take in for one person.
hope you are doing ok!
Hi from my experience it’s the fear of the unknown combined with indeterminable waiting that gets to us all.I found keeping busy and watching lots of box sets helped. But most of all keep off Dr Google stay on here google us ok if you know where to look otherwise you’ll scare yourself. Try to remember that head and neck cancers respond well to treatment.
let us know how dad gets on.
