Hello,
I'm fairly new to this group and I hope its OK for me to reach for some advice. My dad's throat cancer came back after Christmas and now he is having a complete laryngectomy next week.
I'm really worried about this operation. My Dad has neuropathy which has given him other health issues and im worried that the operation will make him weaker. I'm also wondering if someone could give me an insight into how I can support someone who's had this? I'm not sure what this operation will mean for my dad's way of life and again wondering if someone could offer an insight.
Think I'm just worried as it's something that I don't know a lot about. I know it will prolong his life but I'm concerned that it will impact other parts of his life especially with his other health issues.
Any insight into the above or into a laryngectomy would be much appreciated - again, I hope its OK for me to reach out in this way.
Thanks so much.
Hi Nae94. Welcome to our little group. You've come to the right place. The laryngectomy group is fairly quiet. This one is more active and you should get lots of help here.
My first husband had a laryngectomy in 1987 after a course of radiotherapy failed. Of course he lost his voice but found a new one. He made an excellent recovery and lived a good life
Our three other Community Champs have had the same operation . I'll tag them for you and I'm sure one of them will be along with their advice.
Meanwhile you could look at the National Association of Laryngectomee Clubs Just click on the link I've made in red
Best wishes

Hiya- I don’t know about it but I’m like you, a daughter of a dad with cancer. We’re at the start of our journey, chemo started this week. I just wanted to say hello and send my wishes. It’s hard to watch your dad going through tough times. One day at a time
Hi and as Dani has said welcome, as she has pointed out I am a Laryngectomee for nearly 3 years now. All 3 of us have different experiences of having a laryngectomy. I had options available but the alternatives seemed to present various problems so on the advice of my Consultant opted for removing my voice box. It turned out the best option, your world changes but we learn to grasp the problem
You say it’s returned does that mean he has had previous treatment for it as if he has then if you let us know one of us can advise better for you
I have a speech valve fitted so it is all but the same as having a voice with adaptions to the way you use it. The group that Dani has given you is very informative and I am a member of it
If we don’t hear from you you prior to the operation I hope all goes well and always remember he will have support from his MacMillan Speech Therapist who will help you as well
Take care
Tony

Hi Tony,
Thank you for this, he was having radiotherapy and then was told that it had worked. It wasn't until just after Christmas that we were told he would need more treatment.
Thank you for giving me this insight, appreciate you getting back to me.
Thank you.
Thanks for reaching out and saying hello. Sending you the very best at this time. One thing I've learned is to take it one step at a time and to reach out to communities such as this one.
Dad's are the strongest and I'm sure that yours will be as well.
Again, sending wishes and I hope your journey goes ok.
I hope all goes well for him as he has had prior RT then I hope he can have the voice valve fitted
Please let us all know how he gets on and for yourself take care and hopefully don’t worry too much as I’m sure he will be in great hands

Good evening Nae94, i understand how you and your dad are feeling as i have had cancer return in the head and neck area where i had a laryngectomy done after my third encounter with it. Health-wise it should not affect him its just the first two/three weeks which is the most uncomfortable period where we suddenly realise that speaking and breathing will be different as the nose and mouth come redundant and we just breathe through the hole in our neck ( stoma) which has a filter (HME) to condition and control the airflow, also where we used to blow our nose or sneeze it all comes out of the stoma instead also eating will be difficult so a feeding tube will be fitted until your dad has passed a swallow test. It all sounds complicated and so much different but by taking things a day at a time everything will slot into place with the help of a speech therapist and dietician and of course your dad's consultant and team. To me, it's all second nature as i had my laryngectomy back in 2010. Eating and drinking should all return back to normal once everything has healed and recovered. Please feel free to ask any more questions, all the best to you all, and take care.
