My husband had major surgery back in August. He had over 80% of his tongue removed, the whole floor of his mouth and a bit shaved off his jaw. He has recently finished 33 sessions of radiology but feels a lump. Doctors said a few weeks ago when we mentioned if that it would be an ulcer it’s not though. They have said he can have a scan end of February. I worry as he wasn’t the stereotypical mouth cancer patient they told us it wouldn’t spread and it did very quickly. I don’t want to wait that long! They also said could be a blocked saliva gland. Wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar and can offer any advice.
Thank you for reading xx
Hi Cala and welcome
You say you last discussed it a few weeks ago.
Time to bring it up again and insist you have an appointment with his oncologist. I wouldn’t wait. It’s true that radiotherapy can cause any number of lumps and bumps but there’s no way anybody but his team can say what it might be. You shouldn’t be left to worry like this.
I have seen my oncologist twice out of sequence and each time I was reassured that they were happy to see me and that I should always report anything that worried me.
Best of luck.
let us know how things go.

Hi Cala. I was also told any worries or niggles to contact the consultant s medical secretary. They would sooner see you than wait just in case. I’ve had one issue 6 month ago and dentist referred me it was nothing but again was told they would sooner see me. I have one ent appointment left before my 5 years is up 2 weeks ago I was still told any issues after the 5 years get in touch with hospital direct rather than g p.
So please chase an appointment they are the experts.

Surely it couldn’t be cancer after 33 radiology sessions? Would that not kill off everything?
That soon after he finished...not likely, but only his oncologist can say
I think you need to know just to put your mind at rest. You've spent enough time on the roller coaster. It's something we never get used to
I was told that recurrence is most likely in the first year and If I made two I was likely out of the woods

They also said could be a blocked saliva gland.
I had a blocked infected parotid duct that made one side of my face swell up alarmingly. I was doubly annoyed because it was my only surviving major salivary gland. A course of ibuprofen and antibiotics sorted it

I get blocked saliva glands - small ones not the major parotid. These manifest as small lumps inside the mouth. I was very worried at first, but quickly reassured by my team. Now I just let them be and they go after a few days.
