Struggling with pain

Mum has terminal jaw cancer originally diagnosed in July with prognosis of one maybe two years. She has had 10 sessions of radiotherapy and has been getting steadily worse since with a lot of weight loss due to being unable to eat. We saw the consultant two weeks ago who looked at her mouth and said the radiotherapy appears to have worked and doesn’t want to see her for 3 months. Through research I have got her on Aymes protein drink  which she managed today. We haven’t seen a dietician since her radiotherapy ended at the beginning of September. She is on Fentanyl patches 25 micrograms and oral morphine when needed (which is several times a day), paracetamol every 4 hours and a nerve painkiller at night (can’t remember the name). The Fentanyl patch dosage was increased from 15 micrograms 3 weeks ago and the new dose worked up until 3 days ago. Her pain nurse is going to contact her GP to up the dose again.  I am worried this will only work for another couple of weeks before it will stop working again.

  • Hi Jules, so sorry to hear how your mum is.

Most of us here feel pretty rubbish for two or three weeks after treatment end but we would have had 6 or 7 weeks of radiation. Can you contact your Mum's CNS?I think you need a chat with your Mum's oncologist to seek some honest answers. I'm sure you know what I mean. .

Her dietician...again through her CNS...should prescribe some food replacement drinks. You shouldn't need to pay for them.

Sorry I can't be more constructive but I can only imagine what constant pain in the jaw like that must be like and I think I'd rather be half asleep with analgesia than in pain....but that's just me.

    Hugs

  • Hi Jules so sorry hear your mums in pain. Please do as Dani suggests contact her cns and via medical secretary her oncologist. Plus she shouldn’t have to pay for the high calorie drinks I was on 6 ensure compact drink  a day after treatment all on prescription. Get g p to issue script or oncologist.
A dietician should have seen her as well chase that U.K. as well no one should be in pain through cancer when there’s medication available.

  • Thank you for the advice. I do agree we need some honest answers and will contact the relevant parties for an up to date prognosis. I will also enquire about replacement drinks which will be very helpful. The CNS rang late today to say she thought Mum probably has an infection and was going to get the doctor to prescribe antibiotics. I don’t really know how she can diagnose this over the phone without seeing her. I contacted her GP who prescribed a stronger patch saying she shouldn’t have to put up with the pain. Thank you again for taking the time to reply, it means a lot. Wishing you all the best.

  • Again thank you for taking the time to reply, it helps so much talking to people who understand and I will definitely be doing some chasing. Wishing you all the best.

  • Look after yourself too. Hugs
