New gingival/gum lesion

I was previously successfully treated for SCC of lower jaw with surgery and reconstruction about 2 years ago.

I now have a new ulcer/lesion on the gum of upper jaw. It is only small, millimetres only, like a little white lump.

Unfortunately my routine check up has been cancelled due to strikes and I’m trying to get a new one.

Does anyone have any experience with gum cancer? Is small something that doctors might not worry about or should I keep trying for an appointment?

Thank you.

  • Hi please keep trying for an appointment. My consultant s say they would rather see us and it be nothing than leave it too long and be something worse.
Did you have a Macmillan or cancer nurse maybe give them a ring. I know mine has got me in if I’ve needed to be seen.
    Hoping it’s nothing.

  • Good evening Daffne, due to your history I would chase up another appointment, I had lower jaw surgery involving reconstruction but my first cancer was on my lower gum/floor of the mouth. I hope it's nothing to worry about and is just an ulcer. Wishing you all the best, take care.

  • Hi Daffne. I’ll repeat what Hazel and Chris have suggested. You should be seen so phone your CNS and tell them you have a concern that is outwith a routine review.

  • Hi Daffne

I agree with the others, definitely get a follow up from your consultant. The ulcer may amount to nothing but if it is an issue early detection is key.

I have also had jaw cancer and operations as a result. I recently had a scare with an ulcer that was taking ages to heal and went to see my consultant. He told me to continue putting the ulcer paint on it and come back in 2 weeks which I did. He then said it was nothing to worry about. Hopefully this will be the same for you. Better to be safe.

  • Thank you.

The ulcer I have is atypical but consistent with my first cancer, particularly in that it is relatively painless at this stage.

I strongly suspect it is cancer, but fortunately it is currently only small.

  • May I ask how your cancer first presented? My cancer was a persistent but relatively painless sore that eventually became painful. This second small lesion is consistent with that.

  • I’m actually going through the shock stage at the moment, because I’m pretty sure this is another cancer. Sleepless night. I do dread the treatment.

  • Thank you. I have reached out to the CNS. But I’m aware how much pressure hospitals are currently under.

  • My first cancer presented as an ulcer on my gum that would not heal, initially not painful and also quite small. The same for my other cancers. However they have all been successfully treated and as I said my last scare turned out to be an ulcer although it did look very like the ulcers that did turn cancerous. I definitely have my fingers crossed for you that it turns out to be nothing.

  • Ignore the pressure Daffne. I don’t think your oncologist will mind seeing you at all. Mine always said to me he’d rather see an ulcer than a cancer and I was to contact them with any worry

If you don’t hear from your CNS today tgen keep contacting them till you do. If it’s nothing it’s nothing. If it is something then soonest dealt with. Xx
