PEG Removal

Am having my PEG removed on Friday and had assumed it would be removed under a general anaesthetic. Having just read the paperwork it seems it’s just local sedation even though no food or drink for 6 hours before. Just wondered if anybody could let me know what the removal procedure is like, does it heal quickly and is it painful?

Debbie xx

  • Debbie I've had 3/4 removals/changes over the years and had no sedation at all and minimal pain, takes no time at all. My last one was removed in my front room by a district nurse (or whatever they're now called).

You'll need a dressing on the site for a few days but it'll quickly heal.

  • Thank you Mike, that’s so reassuring to hear.

  • Hello Debbie,

Ive still got my PEG in but have had it changed several times by the visiting nurse. No sedation is needed, she just deflates the little balloon that holds about 2cm of water that sits inside the stomach and quite quickly but gently pulls out the whole tube. It doesn’t hurt at all, and you can go about your daily activities straight after.

    best wishes,

    Laura.

  • Hi

When I had mine removed the nurse couldn't pull it out so she pushed it in instead. Nature then took its course. It was  fineSlight smile. No sedation or pain killers required.Good luck for Friday but you won't need it x

  • Thank you Laura, this site is such a godsend for information. Debbie x

  • That’s absolutely great to know. many thanks x

  • Hi. No sedation or pain relief. The dietician cut the end of the tube which deflated the internal ‘ balloon’. She then pressed gently around the PEG & pulled swiftly. It was a short sharp pain for a few seconds & then was fine. I had to have a drink to check there was no leakage. Then a dressing on & told not to get it wet for a few days. I changed the dressing each day. Healed quickly. Now just a dimple

  • Thank you for that, you all seem to have had easy experiences (if only the rest of this whole scenario was easy) x

  • It was a lot less traumatic than having it fitted!

  • So it wasn’t just me who found it traumatic. I had a dreadful time with bleeding and pain, will be very relieved to have it out tomorrow!
