Finally got tonsilectomy, right tonsil removed and voice box polyps shaven. Day 3 and pain is off the charts. Medication. Is strong but kills to swallow. Have been breaking down from pain n frustration because im so scared to swallow. I read it takes a glod 6 to 7 days to peak and so scared.

  • Hi Sev

I had both tonsils removed and part of the base of my tongue last July. Recovery was painful apparently it’s worse as we get older. I too found it difficult to swollen, keep up with the pain meds. It did get worse around day 7 but then started to feel better. I stuck to soft foods. Biopsy revealed I needed another operation as the primary was deeper under where my left tonsil had been, so I had another operation. This meant more pain, more time recovering and being able to swallow. Everyone on this forum  will give you  lots of support and advice. It’s okay to be scared, it’s okay to cry and be frustrated. Main advice everyone will give you is keep up with the pain meds and keep off mr google. My scans now show clear and I have regular check ups.. You will get good support on here, it was and still is a great life line for me

  • Hi Debbie,

Thank you and right now the only thing I can do is keep up with the pain meds. I think the fact that its so time consuming awaiting test after test results is also taking its toll. That sounds very painful having to redo the op and Im sorry you had to go through that.

  • Hi Sev. Though I didn’t have polyps shaved, after my right tonsillectomy I found the pain peaked around Day 4 post op and then began to subside. Post 2 weeks I was eating fairly normally again. Did they give you Oxetacaine? If not I’d ask for some. It numbs the throat before eating and would also help with swallowing meds. Also paracetamol and ibuprofen are best taken in syrup form at this stage due to the pain. If they didn’t give you them you should request them with a syringe so you can squirt them down your throat. Also, even if you don’t feel the need to, keep taking laxatives (Movicol, Laxido can be bought over the counter).  Impacted constipation is thoroughly miserable - for me it was far worse than the throat pain - and it will creep up on you. It is very very common when you’re on a regime of painkillers like you are and many of us have suffered from it.  Good luck. We are all behind you Thumbsup

  • Hi Sev. You can try crushing meds and then put in milk as that’s easier to go down. The pain will start to subside. It’s ok ti cry it’s ok ti sit in kitchen floor at 0300 we’ve all done that. Tonsil snd mouth pain is off the scale. As Mark has said if you’re on strong pain killers try to get st least a sachet if laxido down daily. . . I found drinking through a straw helped.you

can do that to get meds down once crushed

  • Hi Sev - got the t-shirt on this one!  By day 10 or so you will wonder what all the fuss was about.  Just try to take some painkillers about 30+ mins before you want to eat and it should help knock the pain down a little.  Also stagger the various drugs throughout the day so you don't take them all at once.

Try very soft foods.  Complan with Gold Top milk is good for going down easily and getting calories into you.  In a few days try some solids like spaghetti bolognaise with the meat well minced up.  That worked well for me.  I've just had another biopsy on my tongue but the scraped where my tonsils had been and that is like having a tonsillectomy all over again - so I feel your pain!
