Stuffy/Congested nose following RT for nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Hello everyone,

My father finished 35 RT sessions for nasopharyngeal carcinoma + several lymph nodes a month ago. He also had his 3rd chemo session with cisplatin and 5-FU last week. Before starting the treatment, he was blowing his nose every 5-10 min.

Currently his nose is still somehow congested, and he still needs to blow his nose but now is every couple of hours. I was wondering if anyone experienced something similar?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Regards,

Mihaela

  • Hi Mihaela welcome to our little group. My cancer was somewhere different but it was a good few months before all my swelling went down. A month is very early in recovery. I wouldn’t worry unless his nose was clear and is now suddenly blocked up again. I hope his recovery goes apace, it must have been a tough time.

  • Hi Mihaela

Congratulations to your father on finishing his radiotherapy and chemo. Like Dani says it is early days and things can take a while to recover. The area that your father had his radiotherapy will have likely caused swelling which is maybe resulting in the congestion he is suffering. Give it time.

I know how annoying it is to not be able to breathe properly. Since my second maxillectomy I have a permanently blocked nose in spite of much nose blowing and am mainly mouth breathing. This is to do with the op and won’t improve, most annoying but I am beginning to get used to it.

In your father’s case there is time for it to improve as I presume he did not have an op.

Check with his medical team and ask for more info about the congestion.

Sending best wishes to your father on his recovery.

    Lyn
