metastasis from tonsil to occipital lymph node?

Hey all, hope all are doing well.

I have had a bit of a rough couple of weeks, for the last month i have been going into my docs about a cyst on my back, he kept telling me to ignore it

It then got infected and finally he gave me antibiotics which did not work - even then he sent me home despite massive infection

I went to the walk in centre who announced i needed an emergency operation there and then on the 11th of this month, 2 hours later i was being wheeled in for a general.

I am getting it all dressed daily and apparently it is slowly healing.

Anyway today i noticed that what i think is my right occipital lymph node (back of head, level with lower part of ears) is swollen and tender on one side- how concerned should i be? has anyone heard of metastasis from the tonsil to this node? or am i being silly?

Logically i know it is more likely to be related to my 5th covid jab yesterday and the big hole in my back but cant help worrying.

Would you mention it to the nurse doing dressings, or do a gp consult?.  My gp is pretty useless to be honest and i seem to have done tonnes of consults.

Cheers

  • Hi Trev. You’re still under ENT contact your cancer or macmillan nurse.  We’re always told they would sooner see us then not see us until it’s too late. It’s more than likely not related but we aren’t medically trained so contact tomorrow.
    Hope back  heals soon

  • Hey hazel, to be honest i am furious with my gp

In 2015 i got a cyst in the same place, my gp refused to treat it, it got infected, he gave me antibiotics and it got really bad and i was in pain for months after eventual surgery.

Roll forward to 2022 and i told him at the start i was worried about infection but we went exactly the same path and now i have months trying to juggle work with recovery, oh well.

Anyway i dont have a macmillan nurse, i do see a consultant every 6 months tho...

I was thinking of asking the nurse who does my dressing if that is where my node is - then at least if i do email consultants secretary i can be accurate (it could be a tender cyst i guess, another one!)

  • Trev

Are you sure you don’t have a clinical nurse specialist to contact? They are not always Macmillan nurses. If not I would ring your consultant’s secretary and tell her you have a swollen lymph node but don’t specify which one.
Back to occipital nodes.  My oncologist always feels there. I asked why and he said for completeness not that he ever saw mets there. A cancerous node is hard and painless. A reactive node softer and painful. I wouldn’t worry therefore but better get it seen.

  • Hey Beesuit Great advice as usual. I will reread that

  • hi dani, i have never had a nurse no, i had a speech therapist very briefly, but no nurse

My consultant never checks there, he checks the side of my neck and scopes me but nowhere else.

I seem to have contacted my consultants secretary a LOT in the last 18 months, i contacted her about the ulcer on my tongue, asked for advice about my jab and chased a late appointment as well, they must be sick of me.

I am not even sure if it IS the lymph node, i do know i have a benign parotid tumour fairly close to that area which my first consultant said would need to be treated but my second consultant was very dismissive of and said didnt need treating.

Anyway i know speculating is pointless, i will confirm with my nurse that is is a lymph node, then contact secretary.

    Thanks

  • I seem to have contacted my consultants secretary a LOT in the last 18 months,

That’s what they are there for. So please don’t worry. Your consultant will remember you but  his secretary probably won’t…. Unless you bring her gifts for Christmas Wink

  • Hi Dani, sorry to be a bother, i am seeing the nurse last thing tomorrow (5:30)

Would you mention a swollen node to the secretary right away? or wait till nurse has given an opinion?

I am wary of wasting peoples time, but the sooner i let consultant know the sooner i have a chance of being seen.

  • Trev I dont mean to moan but you need a different doctor as he is not doing you any favours. I went to my own doctor 3 times before being sent to hospital and I think the doctor knows he slipped up. No big deal but going to the cardiologist and been told there that he has been doing this job for over 30 years and there is nothing wrong with my heart. Great and then I have a heart attack and a stent fitted. Then really bad pains probably been in A and E 4 times and told nothings wrong every time until eventually diagnosed with heart failure . and to add insult to injury apparently I was suppose to get a heart failure nurse , which has never been mentioned. Thankfully the wheels are turning in the right direction. The consultant said i did the right thing getting my neck checked . So Trev bin that doctor off and go to the experts imho

  • Hi Trev. Normally I’d say leave it till your nurse has seen you but it’s Friday and your appointment is late. So I’d jump the gun and phone tge hospital in the morning. You can always cancel.
