Post surgery and radiation surveillance and management

Hi Guys, This time last year I was half way through my 33 radiation sessions. I had surgery for ACC of the left submandibular Glad on the 13th of July. Since then I have had regular appointments with the MaxFax surgeon who carried out the surgery. However, I am concerned that I have not had a Pet scan, or any MRI since the surgery. I did have a CT scan of the chest about 7 months ago as i had a cough, but the surgeon is reluctant to arrange any scans because of exposure to yet more radiation. I have been trying to find an NHS protocol for the surveillance of ACC post treatment. Most of what i find suggest regular scans, however they are all non-UK based. It does seem that we are out of step with the rest of the world regarding post surgery management and surveillance of ACC. can ayone share their experiences or does anyone have any protocols that cover this?

Brian

  • Hi Brian

I had 2 surgeries last July and August. I have had 2 MRI’s since then, and I’m having a 3rd this month. I only had surgery though, no further treatment, there are people who will answer you, who have had treatment, who can say whether they have regular scans or not. Hope you get some positive advice

  • Hi Brian Following my 2 episodes of surgery (like Debbie no RT) I had follow up PET scans at around 6 months.  Since then I've only had scopes.  On my reoccurrence it was the visual scope that indicated a tumour.  Subsequent scans did not show anything despite knowing where it was...  For me I am comfortable with that process, but occasionally I do ask if a scan would be useful just in case it has spread; we have a frank conversation and reassurance that there is little benefit in another scan without good reason to be suspicious.
