Went to GP on 3rd October and received an urgent 2 Week Wait referral for possible tongue cancer.

Obviously coming up to the end of the two weeks. Does anyone know what sort of timescale the urgent referrals are at for Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Thanks In Advance

Hev

  • I’m not at Birmingham but I’d suggest you phone the consultant’s secretary to check progress. I had to wait four weeks and I phoned the department to discover some admin clerk had downgraded my referral to routine so it’s worth checking. Be mindful that lots if referrals are delayed these days which is a real worry. Chase them up and good luck. 90% of referrals turn out not to be cancer

  • Thanks both, called today and they have a 3 week delay Pensive so I should hopefully be seen within 5 weeks of referral.

looking at going private but that doesn’t seem so simple!

  • Good evening Hevra, glad you managed to contact your team, i know that waiting is one of the hardest parts but this delay should not affect anything but once you get to see the consultant it will be all go with test, x-rays and scans if needed. Going private might help get you seen quicker but the cost is quite high so maybe hang on for a couple of weeks and see what happens. Wishing you all the best, take care.

You need a referral note from your GP which is simple enough, then you book an appointment with a private consultant yourself. I did that but got an NHS appointment just in time so cancelled
