Hello,
I am hoping for some advice please. My dad was diagnosed with tonsil cancer in 2020, he had tonsils removed, neck dissection and 30 rounds of radiotherapy. We were hopeful of a curative outcome and 4 monthly checks with ENT consultant showed no signs of recurrence and had a sigh of relief when we reached the one year mark.
He developed back pain in April this year and pain in left leg which we assumed was just normal as he is 70 years old. However, he had an MRI yesterday which appears to show bone metastases to the back, hip and rib.
The GP has referred us back to oncology but I am completely shocked and devastated by this news and i can't begin to know how to navigate it.
We have no knowledge of if this is the original cancer that has spread or new cancer that we are unaware of. Does anyone know if there is likely anything that can be done in terms of treatment to prolong life?
I know this is not curable but am terrified that I am going to lose my father imminently.
Thank you for any advice.
Hi Kath88, welcome from me. I honestly don't think I can answer your question, not offer any useful advice re treatment or outcomes. I just wanted you to know that your post is not being ignored!
I think the best you can do is have a detailed conversation with your clinical team with your father's consent, preferably with your father present. Hopefully from that you will both know what his options are and what the prognosis is. Then you can give him your fullest support to help him achieve his personal wishes regarding treatment and outcomes.
Good evening Kath88, im very much like Peter and cannot offer any advice as it does not come up much on here, i would have thought they could offer some type of treatment. I wish i could offer better advice, wishing and hoping for a positive outcome when you meet the oncologist/consultant. Best wishes, take care.
Chris xx
Hi Kath
While bone mets from Tonsil cancer are rare they do occur and there will be a protocol so please don't think you'll lose your father soon. Both chemotherapy and radiotherapy are used in treatment, the first to slow progression and the second particularly to control pain. Do make sure you understand exactly what his team will do. I'm sure something is possible.
Let us know how you get on

Hi Kath 88 welcome from me as well. As Dani says don’t give up hope there’s all sorts if protocol out there. Take a pen and paper to oncologist meeting and don’t leave until you’re sure if what they are saying. If in doubt keep asking questions.
pop o. Here as and when to update or rant.

Thank you all for your replies. This has come as a huge shock to us all. He had a back issue on and off for years but mostly very active and had no reason to think it was anything other than that as he seemed otherwise fine.
He seems resigned to the fact that he thinks he will die very soon which I am finding difficult as I would like to think they may be able to do something to provide quality of life and extend his life.
We have no clue as to whether this is a new cancer or the existing one, however, checks and scope with the last one bring done in May showed no sign of reoccurance albeit no scans were done.
It feels like torture waiting for an appt to come through from oncology (GP referred us on Thurs evening). I contacted his ENT team who said they will try to get us in but not heard back yet.
I feel like every passing day things will be getting worse and there might not be abything they can do.
Thank you all for taking the time to respond it's so overwhelming.
Hi Kath88 Did yiur dad have a dedicated Macmillian or cancer nurse for original diagnosis. I find mine even 4 years post treatment always willing bro help if I need her. Recently I had to contact her about a referral and she helped , luckily the referral proved to be unnecessary but she was at the end if an email if I needed her. Maybe you could try to contact on Monday ?
