Hi al.

Hope you are all.doing well.

21 weeks post treatment!!! Wow what a journey!!

I haven't used my PEG for 5 weeksand have an appointment at gastro clinic tomorrow,   do.you think if i ask them they will remove it for me? I hate having it now as it is a constant reminder of cancer. I am eating most foods with sauces or gravy,  my main problem.is chewing as they removed 6 teeth back.in January before treatment started!! Hopefully they will.replace them. I still can't eat spicy foods, bread or chocolate as my mouth is.very dry, i.drink.lots of water throughout the day and when eating.

I had a.lovely few.days away with my partner,  just hard to find places that did food i could eat. In total i have lost about 2 and half stone which i could.afford to lose RoflRofl

I am.going back to work.on 31st Octoberon a phased return.

I still get tired and light headed if trying to push myself, as my dad says I must learn to walk.before i can run lol.

take care guys and dolls. .

  • Hi

    1. great update. Yes ask them ti remove your peg if you’re maintaining weight there’s no need for it. As for teeth I was lucky didn’t need any but ti be honest I’m struggling to think if anyone who has had teeth replaced free of charge. I know s few who’ve had dentures but had to pay. There’s the possibility of implants but it’s too early  in recovery as our jaws can be fragile you would need  dentist with experience of radiated jaws
sauces and gravies fir a while are the normal for a good  while. I took the mantra food us fuel and ate what  i could when I could. You’ll get there we all do.
      Good luck with peg removal

  • Hi and thanks for the update. Yes....get that PEG out. Teeth ..... Get cracking at your hospital restorative dentist. They promise us lots but we are pretty low on their priorities once treatment is finished. Implants work pretty well even in irradiated jaws but the latest research seems to suggest placement after 14 months and loading some 9 months later.

Top jaw implants do less well than bottom jaw, I gather

The probability is that you'll have to pay for them yourself, I'm afraid.

Well done with your return to work and some sort of normality.....Brilliant

  • Good evening Zakaroo, i remember your previous posts, thanks for this positive update its always great to read especially for people who are just starting treatment or surgery. I think they will consider removing your PEG as you have not been using it, as long as you are gaining weight otherwise they might advise you to wait a bit longer but it sounds as if you are well on your way with your eating. When they removed my teeth they did replace them with implants but i think it depends from hospital to hospital and the consultant. I think most of us lose weight but i was the opposite of you and could not afford to lose weight Slight smile. Dad/ parents know best as always Slight smile . Wishing you all the best for your continued recovery, take care.

  • Hi Zackaroo

Great news that you are doing so well and that you could get away for a few days, that is a big step.

I too found it difficult to find food that I could manage when I went out after my first maxillectomy other than soup, smashed avocado without the toast, eggs benedict without the toast and some soft desserts such as cheesecake. I ended up taking my own if I knew I was going to be out all day.

I had a denture made at my Dental Hospital which I had to pay some towards but it was a lot cheaper than if I had it made privately. It was quite affordable.

The implants are quite expensive and I am currently waiting to see if I can have them through the Public System as a special case but this is quite an exception here in Australia as you normally  have to pay for them.

If I could do without them I would opt for the denture again but unfortunately nothing for it to attach to.

It is great that the phased return to work is in the diary already. The fatigue lessens bit by bit and you will be back on top of things in no time. You are well on the road to recovery.

    Best wishes

    Lyn
