Hi. Got diagnosed with tongue cancer 5 weeks ago. Since then have had MRi and CT. Xray and bloods. Got a call yesterday for pre op in 2 weeks but haven't heard from a doctor or anyone to know what they are going to do and what the results of the scan were. Is this normal or should I of had a appointment with doctor or consultant first?

  • Hi there - also just had my initial diagnosis plus same tests you have had for tongue cancer. You should be seeing a consultant to discuss results and plan etc, NHS near me have been pretty efficient but sometimes out of sequence. I have found the nurse specialists to be super helpful for this so try and locate that team and ask the question. Hope all goes well,

  • Hi and welcome.
It looks like your team are on top of all the tests. Your team will have to meet to discuss all the tests and scans once they are in. These teams (MDT) usually meet once a week to discuss all the patients under their care. I’m sure you’ll hear as soon as they know what’s happening. You’ll have an appointment with your surgeon or oncologist.
Was any indication given whether you were having surgery and or chemotherapy and radiotherapy? Usually there’s something said.

  • Hi. So they said it looks like surgery should be enough. But I have seen anyone to discuss more detail just a call to book pre op in.

    1. Spery to hear that. Hopefully caught early enough for cure. I feel like I keep bugging the nurses too much but I will send another question to them. Thank you.
  • There is no such thing as a silly question and I am confident no one will think anything other than how can we help.

  • Yes give your CNS a shout. Get them to explain everything. You deserve that. They will be fine. They know how you are feeling.

  • I suspect they are running fast on this one.  Many paths have to come together to make treatment effective and speedy. I guess they will speak to you very soon, but know that you will need surgery so are getting the prep work done ASAP.  I only had surgery, although that is a slightly unusual course as surgery is normally followed by radiotherapy
