Hello, anyone experience jawbone death following treatment? My husband has jaw death. His jaw is fractured and he is not well enough to go under general anaesthetic to fix it. Wondering if anyone else is living with a broken jaw and how they cope.

  • I haven’t personally but can I recommend you get in touch with Vinod Patel from Guys. He is doing wonderful work with medical treatment for this.

  • Hi Milosmum

I am sorry to read your husband has been left with this condition after treatments. Has he been offered pentoxifylline and vitamin E to help with this. I was diagnosed with ORN early in the year and I am on this to at least try to stablise the condition and I think it is helping to do this but it is still early days. It is worth looking into.

    Best wishes

    Nicky

    That’s what Guys are doing.

  • Thank you. He hasn’t been offered that so I will ask his consultant about it.

  • Yes please do. I was at a conference where Vinod Patel presented a paper and there were X-rays of the most awfully collapsed jaws that had made sufficient recovery to be functional. Astounding! If your consultant is reticent to prescribe then please do ask for a referral to Guys. They try even in the most seemingly hopeless cases

  • Hi there.   What exactly causes these problems in the jaw. Please can someone explain.  And how common is it.  Will we all get this at some point? Thankyou. Lizzie

  • It’s quite rare and is exacerbated by invasive procedures to the irradiated jaw such as extractions. It’s a lifetime risk though very small. It’s considered to be a type of radiation fibrosis.

Lizzie. It’s not  common and we won’t all get it so relax.
It’s important to look after your teeth and never ever allow your own dentist to take any out. That’s a job for  the hospital that treated you.
