Hi everyone I have been given a date for biopsy of adenoid and tongue , it's 5th August which seems ages away when you just want it over, but I have some busy day planned next week so hopefully time will go quickly. Now just waiting to hear about Mri, with a head Mri do you still have a cage thing on your head ? do you go all the way in the tunnel , I have had a spine one before but went in feet first so my head was out .

  • Hi. With an MRI it’s just your head and half of your chest. The cage is the receiver so yes that has to go on as well. They are a pain to lie through as they take so long but you have headphones on and you just have to zone out.
If you are having contrast make sure you’re well hydrated so that they can get into your veins.
Good luck and let us know how it goes

  • Hi

I've had several MRI scans of my head. I've had ear plugs plus ear phones. The equipment around you head feels like a helmet but it's not directly on your head or face. You go into the scanner head first so it can feel slightly closed in. However, you can generally see the staff who are behind a glass screen and they give you a little buzzer to press if you need them to come back into the scanning room.

They can put the radio on through your headphones but to be honest you can't hear much if it because the scanners make a fair bit of clicking/clunking noises.

It lasts 30- 40 mins. The radiographers I've had have been very good at dividing it up into chunks of time and talking to me from behind their screen. I found that helped me to count down the time.

I personally haven't found it too bad but I guess some people do feel a bit claustrophobic.

  • Thankyou I think if I can see the staff I will be OK. Hopefully it won't be too long to wait. I know this is a daft question but does the Mri pick up cancer well or do they rely on the biopsy. Hope you don't mind me asking.

  • I don't mind at all! It's not a daft question Slight smile As far as I know a biopsy will confirm that there are cancer cells, and which type e.g. squamous cell, etc. The scan will show the position and size of the Cancer.

  • That makes sense thankyou.
