Hello all

I have cancer in the neck and mouth, right bronchi and lung. I also have a collapsed spine, and heart disease. I am not under treatment (no questions about that please) and in Palliative Care at home.

The reason I am posting today is to ask how any of you fellow sufferers have got on trying to eat, what to eat when the slightest thing hurts the tumour and where it is.

It hurts some days even drinking water. I have little appetite anyway, and have just got rid of a fecal impaction. Another problem I have is severe mucus which makes it hard to eat and constantly needs clearing, not easy as it's so thick and clinging.

So, basically I have been living on the ensure drinks the odd v ripe plum, some soup, weetabix and porridge, youghurt, rice pudding, prunes and custard. Last Friday I managed a 1/3 rd of a tinned roe and 2 chips.

Problem is that I also have bad constipation and some of the items on my list appear to cause constipation! Which is a bit of a disappointment as I dont want to keep blocking up. I will be grateful for any foods that you have managed to eat in spite of the pain etc!

Kind Regards

Mac

  • Hi Mac.
When I was in treatment and couldn’t eat much, poached eggs went down easily and so did scrambled eggs mixed up with Philly cheese which made them softer. Tinned fruit like peaches are easy too.
Sweet potato mash. Long slow cooked lamb stew. Tinned macaroni cheese. Biscuits to dunk in warm tea. Avocado mashed with banana is full of calories and protein. You could try a creamy overcooked cheesy pasta.
Others will come on with more I’m sure
Are you taking some mild laxatives. I was prescribed Laxido and two of those a day kept the opiate constipation away completely.
I hope some of this helps.

  • Thanks Dani, I think it is Laxido that I have just started, did the 8 sachets in 6 hours, hopefully I am clear now, and I think the nurse told me to do 2 a day onwards.

How much morph were you taking Dani? I am on 20mg of modified release morphine, plus oramorph usually 3 - 5 ml a few times a day.

  • Hi,

I found sennokot liquid did the trick with constipation and easy as you only need a couple of spoonfuls.

Food wise, I was on a liquid diet for a couple of months (hospital shakes). I can’t taste much but strangely hazelnut spread in ready brek tastes nice.

    • I bought some shakes called Nourish. They aren’t cheap but full of nutrition. I’ve just started to taste them now, 3 months post treatment.
      All  the best,

      Clare
  • Morphine. Yes about the same as you. Plus paracetamol

  • I took a look at the Nourish shakes, way out of reach price wise for me, but now we are getting a juicer! Slight smile

  • Hi. I’m in week 16 post treatment. Foods I managed in the early days were -Activia peach/mango yoghurt, the custard & cream top of a mini trifle, very soggy weetabix, creme caramel, mousse type desserts, skyr, tinned peach slices, tiramisu. I could eat a few teaspoons of these foods, took a few weeks to increase the amount.
Also Scandishakes, the chocolate flavour tastes best. I get these on prescription from GP.
    Hope that helps.

  • Thanks, a few more names and ideas!
