Has anyone gone against the advise from the specialist not oncologist to NOT have teeth out for radiotherapy & had no problems during & after their treatment , their teeth have been fine , could you tell me your experiences please ? X

My own experience is they took all of them out unnecessarily. I would suggest going to a dentist to make sure your teeth are not in order before you let them take them out. If they are in order they are not supposed to take them out.

  • Can't really comment (as I'm not that far on in the journey yet) but when I had my operation to remove the cancer from my tongue and do a neck dissection I was told they would be having  a look at my teeth and taking some out "in case" I need radiotherapy.

I was quite surprised and said we don't even know if I'm having radiotherapy yet so it seems a bit premature to start removing perfectly good teeth lol!

In the end they just took one "stump" that was left over from a tooth that had been given a root canal many years ago. I think when it comes to teeth you do have to question what they are doing and why they are doing it.

Diagnosis: Squamous Cell Carcinoma right side of the tongue - T2, N0, M0 (2022) / Leukoplakia with moderate dysplasis (2013)

Treatment: Partial glossectomy with a wide excision and level I-III neck dissection (31/3/22)

What should I say. Try another one! He only has to look at the teeth that cant take that long.

  • Yes I’ve been trying to find one

  • Aly it is your decision. Ask your hospital dentist to explain how unfit your teeth are. If they are heavily restored and especially if you have any gum and bone recession you are actually better off without them. Mine are heavily restored and  for some inexplicable reason my hospital left them all. After RT you must NEVER let your own dentist do ANY extractions. They have to be done in a dental hospital. I had to have one wisdom tooth out and I suspect another is on the way out. This mightily p****d me off as I had to wait some considerable time in pain for a hospital appointment.

Any referring dentist has to be familiar with long term radiotherapy effects

  • This is great advice Dani, especially with extractions, as you say it must be done by the consultant.
