Dear all, during a recent smear test my partner has recently and unfortunately been informed she is HPV positive. We have been together 2:years.

This has created quite an anxious conversation between us both. I wondered given I am male, would the hospital have been able to tell whether I could have had HPV when I was diagnosed in 2020? Around 18 months ago. Can someone catch HPV and that cause oral cancer within a short amount of time, say 4 months?

Also with her being HPV positive, is there anything I can do to mitigate any future risk?

Many thanks

    • Hi mr fox. You need to ask your oncologist. They would have tested your cancer for HPV when they did the biopsy. As far as I am aware oropharyngeal HPV has a long latent period as cancer transformation takes years but I’m no expert. As for mitigation your partner will be monitored for cervical cell changes. I’ve never heard of anybody getting oral cancer as well as cervical but I gat her from literature that there may be slight increased risk.

  • Hi Dani has answered most of question all I will add is at anyone time 84% of the worldpopulation is HPV positive most of us our bodies get rid of it naturally.it’s only a tiny percentage of us who don’t and go on to develop HPV driven tumours.I was HPV positive but my smear a year previous was clear at the cervical end so to speak.I also was told my h p v had been in my body more than likely lurking around for up to 40 years ,waiting to pounce for want if a better word. Your  partner will be screened in another  years time which is the usual route.

Any concerns have a word with your cancer nurse

  • Hi

Just want to comment that when i was diagnosed i was worried about passing hpv on to my partner and her getting cancer.

I was told firstly that hpv typically takes many years to cause cancer, and that secondly the majority of adults have hpv at some point. I believe they are vaccinating young women now but this was still the case at the time.

I was also told most people who catch hpv will not get cancer as a result.

  • The other thing to remember is that HPV is must often transient. Your partners next test may well be negative
