Dear all, during a recent smear test my partner has recently and unfortunately been informed she is HPV positive. We have been together 2:years.
This has created quite an anxious conversation between us both. I wondered given I am male, would the hospital have been able to tell whether I could have had HPV when I was diagnosed in 2020? Around 18 months ago. Can someone catch HPV and that cause oral cancer within a short amount of time, say 4 months?
Also with her being HPV positive, is there anything I can do to mitigate any future risk?
Many thanks
Dani

Hi Dani has answered most of question all I will add is at anyone time 84% of the worldpopulation is HPV positive most of us our bodies get rid of it naturally.it’s only a tiny percentage of us who don’t and go on to develop HPV driven tumours.I was HPV positive but my smear a year previous was clear at the cervical end so to speak.I also was told my h p v had been in my body more than likely lurking around for up to 40 years ,waiting to pounce for want if a better word. Your partner will be screened in another years time which is the usual route.
Any concerns have a word with your cancer nurse

Hi
Just want to comment that when i was diagnosed i was worried about passing hpv on to my partner and her getting cancer.
I was told firstly that hpv typically takes many years to cause cancer, and that secondly the majority of adults have hpv at some point. I believe they are vaccinating young women now but this was still the case at the time.
I was also told most people who catch hpv will not get cancer as a result.
The other thing to remember is that HPV is must often transient. Your partners next test may well be negative
