Hi

My partner has tongue cancer and is in week six of his six week chemo and radiotherapy.  Since his last chemo he is getting bad acid reflux each time he puts liquid or Ensure through his PEG which is meaning he is taking less in.  Grateful to know if anyone has any treatments or tips in dealing with this issue.  The nurses are suggesting a different antacid treatment but just want to know if there is anything else we can try.

Many many thanks to everyone - the advice we have got from the people on this website has been amazing.

Much love to you all

Ema

  • Hi Ema

My hubby had the same problem and we used dispersible Lansoprazole first thing in the morning about 1 hour prior to putting feed or other meds down the tube to help with this. You have to put it in well dispersed as it can collect in the tube if you dont and flush it through with lots of water. You can also try propping him up well post feed and warm the feed slightly rather than give it cold. I would speak to his team/ CNS for advice and a prescription for dispensable antacids.
Unfortunately acid reflux can be a long term side effect of this treatment and 6 years later he is still having to take antacids.

Good luck and wish you both well.

  • Hi Ema

The first thing I was given when I had my NG tube place was lansoprazole. Anything foreign in the oesophagus and stomach tends to precipitate reflux which, like Emma says, can be lifelong. 3 years down the line I am still suffering. long term PPIs are not the answer so I am making some strict lifestyle changes.

This early on I would try getting your husband to sleep with the head of the bed raised and maybe ask about pump feeding at night so that his feed can be dripped in slowly over eight hours? That certainly helped me

Thank you.  I will bear in mind the long term ... at the moment just trying to get through the next few days :)

  • Hang on in there. He has  the worst three or four weeks to come then he'll pull through and slowly improve. A day at a time.....Hugs

  • I have written about this before. The problem is there is no valve to stop it coming up. I have begged my sugeon to put one in to stop this but to no avail. If I bend down the whole stomach comes up. The reason as usual is because we just dont do it. Doctors are very scared of doing something new. And dealing with me as my regular posts and my new one today shows I would do things a lot differently. I also ask for my nose which is not doing anything I have a stoma with which I breathe for it to be blocked off, so  it shouldnt go up there either. Again NO! No reason given.

  • Hi Emma

I took Lansoperazol from having PEG fitted, but got more reflux around this point too. I was prescribed oxetacine and antacid too. This helped.

I was also sleeping propped up on about 6 pillows, which stopped reflux, but was done to stop the mucous heading down my throat.

9 months post treatment I've recently got a bit more reflux as I broaden my diet again. I now take an additional antacid just before bed, which helps and am monitoring food. I still sleep with 3-4 pillows, but arranged more like a wedge. These all help

As Dani said toughest few weeks to come, but it does get better after that. Warmest wishes to you both as you get through this.

    Take care, Gill
