MRI Results

Hi

Anyone know if having to wait 3 weeks for an MRI result which will be a telephone call, is a good sign?  All my friends and family are telling me that I would have heard a lot earlier if there was anything serious.  I'm thinking quite the opposite.  The MRI was of my neck.  I have discomfort when swallowing and pain in glands (no lumps).  Been that way for some months. I'm based in Kent, William Harvey Hospital.  Thanks. Diane

  • Hello Diane

I guess the only people who will know for certain are the people on the other end of the phone, but I had a ct and MRI on 24th and 25th August last year and didn't see the consultant until 25th September. I had cancer, but I already knew that as my Gp had told me following the results of an ultrasound.

However both appointments were face to face. I think it would be unusual and quite callous yo give you that news over the phone.

Try to keep positive and not worry too much in the meantime. Fingers crossed for you x

  • Hi Diane and welcome. Fingers crossed it’s nothing.
It all depends when the Panel ( the multidisciplinary team) meet. They will discuss what action to take on any particular case. You can’t identify cancer in an MRI. It needs a biopsy. Maybe you can ring up earlier? Scan results are usually through to the referring consultant within a week.
    Best of luck

  • Diane hi and welcome.  It sounds just like bad timing.  A couple of weeks is a normal wait as they normally have to quite a bit of work on the MRI in reviewing the scan etc before the discuss with you the outcome.  If the MRI timeframe just missed one of the meetings where they review that tends to put another week of agony (for you in waiting) onto the timeline.

I would ask to see the consultant face to face,  I think AFTER the initial discussion, if they don't need to physically see me, then I would be happy with a phone call for the majority of my appointments.

Hospitals are becoming less constrained as Omnicron recedes and they gain more capacity and less social distancing needed.  Try to insist that you take someone with you as it really helps to have 2 brains remembering what was said if it is cancer.

Here is hoping that you are one of the around 90% of people for who this is a false alarm.
