Hi does anyone have experience of Mouth Ulcers after finishing treatment. I had the last of 35 Radiotherapy sessions for Tonsil and lymph cancer 2 weeks ago. Every night regular as clockwork new mouth ulcers appear at 6 to 7pm. How long does this go on for? And what can I do to help. I am using the mouthwash given by hospital every 2 hours and only eating bland food. eg porridge no sugar or salt etc.

Thanks.

Greg

ps also had 6 weekly session of chemo with cisplatin.

  • Hi Greg yes I still get ulcers periodically and I’m 3 years post treatment. At your stage it’s really early days everything is healing and it’s par for the course. Have you gelclair ? It’s the only thing that cleared my post radiotherapy ulcers.  The gelclair is prescribed as ti but it it’s £65 + fir a weeks supply.
Are you mouth washes 0 alcohol based I used bioxtra very gentle again prescription
the ulcers I get now I I can identify which foods start them usually tomato based ones and cheese plus too much sugar.
Once your mouth heals they will go time varies I was still getting them uo to 3 months post treatment.

I too was tonsil cancer 35 sessions radiotherapy and 2 big chemo.
Sorry  I can’t give you better news.

Thanks for your advice Hazel. I have got Gelclair we have to buy in here as I am in Germany. We have alcohol free mouthwash. I what did you use for the dry mouth at night? I have a CPAP machine for sleep apnoea which makes it worse.

  • Hi Harz I use xyimelts at night time you do need a tiny bit of saliva fir them to start working. I have to buy them  from Amazon. Or other dental suppliers eg in U.K. tge mouth ulcer company sell xyimelts

I still use 1/2 of one even now over 3 years as night tube I do dry uo compared to daytime.

  • Hi Greg,

I'm 10 months post treatment for same, with 6 weeks rt & 6 cisplatin. My ulcers were hideous. Up to about 3 months post treatment I'd get tiny ones across mouth after eating on an evening. I used Caosol after eating and it helped them go down in about an hour. Also mouthwashes and gelclair. Not had any for a while Fingers crossed but taking care still with acidic / spicy food.

    Hope something works!

  • Hi Harz. I know this is a bit off the wall but I'm trying this for another problem but one of the indications is sleep apnoea. NICE recognises it can work but can't seem to be able to allow it on prescription....typically.

  • Hi Harz I am not in the same position as you regarding lack of saliva as mine is as a result of surgery - I did not go to radio post surgery.  Mine comes and goes and is most noticeable when eating and especially sleeping - I guess just like yours.  I find that drinking 1ltr of water in the evening keeps the body nicely hydrated and, for me, reduces the overnight effect.  The downside is having to get up in the night to pee!  But at least I don't have daggers sticking in my throat.
