Hi I am really at the end of my tether. I was diagnosed with 5cm growth onTonsill and affecting 5 lymph nodes. I have completed 32 sessions of radiotherapy and 6 chemotherapies. Since last week the doctors are unable to get the pain under control. They started with a 12mig Fentanyl patch which has been increased to a100mig with no affect. I have mouthwashes, lidocaine spray, novaligin drops, ibuprofen, morphine drops but nothing helps my throat.  All food apart from porridge causes immediate blistering in my mouth. I am in hospital in Germany and they want to feed me through the chemo port in my chest. So my question is does being fed intravenously help relieve the throat pain which nothing seems to help? Yours in desperation Greg.

  • Good evening Greg, sorry to hear that you are in pain, i don't think eating at this moment in time is helping matters, i have always had a feeding tube fitted because of the difficulty in swallowing so i would definitely go with the hospitals advice and opt to have your feed through the chemo port, it might give you a bit of relief from the pain. It sounds as if they are doing their best with the painkillers you are on as its a high dosage. Wishing you all the best.

Thanks I just feel so alone here in Germany. There is no support at all. I am taking loads of stuff but nothing is stopping the pain.

There is a 3 month wait to see a specialist oncology pain doctor here.

  • It cannot be easy being in a different country and i have a strong idea that the covid virus has not helped matters, especially when waiting for appointments.

It sounds dire. I can’t give you medical advice but I have a friend who was in a lot of pain for treatment of an aggressive pharyngeal cancer. She got relief with Pregabalin.
TPN through your chemo port would st least give your mouth and throat a rest

Is there any chance you can get a nasogastric tube so that food gets into your stomach?

I had an NG tube for six weeks after my treatment finished and it saved my life

I hope you can find some help.

thanks I was prescribed this 2 days ago maybe it will take time to work.

I am resisting being fed via chemo port because they will only do this whilst in patient and I don't want yo spend the next 3 weeks or so here in hospital.

Which liquid food are there. No such thing as a dietician here. Also hospital food not fit for purpose. Tomato soup for example was yesterday's offering

  • I have Ensures but there are others like Fortisip etc , maybe having an NG feeding tube will help you which is a tube that goes down the nose and into the stomach. A PEG feeding tube requires sedation and surgery

  • Hi Greg, i was on morphine and fentanyl, but getting even my liquid drinks down was still extremely painful for some weeks following treatment.

I would look to give your throat and mouth a rest, either by a liquid only diet (such as fortisip) or through a tube.
