Hey all,
I had my 1st chemo yesterday for tonsil cancer - the 1st of 7, and my 1st 2 sessions of RT. I expected to feel rough but wow! I have 3 different anti-sickness meds which are just about keeping it at bay but I have no appetite and I don't think it's helping. I've managed some soup this evening and some toast throughout the day. Does this nausea abate between sessions? I wanted to fill myself up on so much good food before my mouth gets too sore. I'm having a RIG tube fitted next week.
Sorry for being such a wimp 2 days in!
Hi SpecRad, it's good that your treatment is under way, unfortunately the treatment can make you lose your appetite, however it's great that you are having a RIG fitted, as this will take the worry of not eating away. I would always advise people to have a RIG if they are offered one, some can manage without it, but it will be there if needed. If you have any questions just ask on here, someone will always answer if they can. All the best with the rest of your treatment.
Regards Ray.
Hi Well done on starting treatment, appetite is a thing we have to work through unfortunately there’s no magic wand. I developed the mantra food is fuel for as long as I could. As for nausea take the meds as directed have you been give steroids ? I was given deximethosone Usually we are prescribed them and they do give you a boost. If the anti sickness meds aren’t helping please tell your team they can change them.
Try a ginger biscuit to ward off the nausea it can help or flat dry ginger.
Take everything one day at a time calories are important if you can’t eat you will need to use the peg as soon as it’s fitted. Try bland foods nothing spicy poached eggs became a staple along with custards. You can ask fir the ensure or fortisips as well. Plus try to fortify what you can eat with cream eg in soups full fat milk in custards and work your way through it.
Sorry there’s no easy fix I got to end of week 3 and had to have n g tube fitted as my mouth snd swallow couldn’t cope any longer.
Goodluck and keep in touch.

Hey, you are definitely not being a wimp!
I was lucky in that i only ever had one bout of nausea with chemo, im just wondering if they can adjust the meds to help?
I cant remember the names of the meds now, but i religiously took one BEFORE chemo, and i also took all the meds they gave me after chemo .... and they injected an anti sickness med during chemo (as part of my drip)
Good luck with the treatment!
