Hi, I had a total laryngectomy back in August and am now having 30 sessions of radiotherapy.
I've had 10 treatments and the side effects have kicked in. I don't have a problem with wearing the mask for my treatment as the eyes have been cut out. But, now I have blisters inside my stoma which bleed and a sore throat (esophagus). Also, my joints are aching and I feel tired all of the time.
Are the blisters a common side effect and if so, is there a treatment for it? Obviously, I will ask the team at my next MDT meeting, but I just wanted to ask people who have been through this.
Hi Gaz and welcome to the community. I had base of tongue cancer and such "ulcers" are indeed standard for radiotherapy to our sensitive mucous membrane. The condition is called mucositis. I might imagine it's the same for you just in. a different place. Best ask your team though as there are things to help but it's a question of waiting for the RT to finish before they get better.
Don't wait for the MDT. Ak your radiographers and they will liaise with the rest of your care team.
Best wishes
Dani

When I had RT my food pipe started to bleed and I was basically eating blood all the time for months. The doctor said it wasnt because of the RT just coincidental. I had about twenty endoscopies over about five months till they could stop it and of course a blood transfusion every week. I dont think I have a drop of my original blood still in me. They do say blood is thicker than water but I suppose that is only with your own original blood.
Hi Gaz welcome to our small community group unfortunately blisters ulcers are par fir the course I was plagued with them. Dani us right lease with your team today don’t wait x I had gelclair which is on prescription it helped but purely the nature of the radiotherapy our mucosa gets battered.
You might need pain medication as well
good luck it’s not easy but it’s worth it in the end.

Good evening Gaz07, im afraid this is a common side effect of radiotherapy, that must be so uncomfortable for you as this is your only way of breathing so having mucus makes it very difficult, i don't know of any solutions as you have to be careful what you spray or put near the stoma. Please phone your team up to get an earlier MDT meeting so they can reassess you. I do feel for you as i had a total laryngectomy so i hope you can get some help from your team, good luck, take care ,

So, I got through the treatment ok and it ended on 6th December. Had my first (six weekly) MDT meeting 5 weeks ago and the consultant found a "Swelling" at the base of my tongue where the free flap joins. She said it could be from the operation or radiotherapy and will check it again at next consultation, but I can't stop thinking that it's back! My next MDT is tomorrow and I'm worried sick.
Although I haven’t had this op I have friends who did. They say it’s normal. It takes a long time for the new tongue to settle. They always “cut” the new bit bigger than it needs to be. So try not to worry.
