Have had radiotherapy (x30) and chemo, but things are.just not getting better, Best I can eat is soups or scrambled eggs, because I had to have some teeth removed, leaving me with a top denture that doesn't fit, and no bottom teeth, and because of the radiotherapy, I now find myself almost totally deaf,

I've dropped from 25st to 14st, and just seem to be loosing the war to put any weight back on.

How can I cope with the depression I feel, I live alone, I don't have any close friends, so called gf vanished as soon as my cancer was confirmed, and certainly no-one else I feel I can confide in as to how suicidal that I feel, every day is an endurance, and I feel this isn't an existence that I want to continue with. I just go to sleep wishing that I don't wake up. So many meds and oromorph here that I could easily overdose on (I tried a few weeks back and was found 4 hours later by carer).

Any advice please

  • Paul. You need help. Contact your GP or your hospital team as soon as you can. You need counselling and possibly meds to help you. Both can be very effective. (I was put on Citilopram during my darkest days and it was a huge help.)

It doesn’t help that it’s the weekend, however there are people you can contact 24/7 and I attach a link to a list of numbers, some of which will be helpful, (see below).

Please act today!  You don’t have to feel like this. And keep in touch with the guys in here please! We’ve most of us experienced at least something of what you’re going through.

Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery. M

  • Hi Paul I can only echo what Mark snd Dani has said. Please contact your team your weight loss should be monitored by the dietician s. You need calories have you ensures or fortisips? I was on at least 6 a day which if you can do soup you can get those in they are 300 calories a time not ideal but they do help. Please follow others advise. This cancer is horrible but the prognosis after treatment is excellent. You need help through this period. Please don’t give in to it.

  • Hi Paul

Please take the advice on here and get help immediately. I didn’t have radiotherapy so not had the same symptoms and difficulties as yourself, but there were times when I was really depressed, and just sat and  cried, I didn’t think I would ever feel better, but I had great support and advice on here, and I am coming through the other side. Has Hazel said the cancer is horrible but the prognosis is good. Speak to your GP, Cancer sNurse snd Dieticians, they are there to help you. My brother also had throat cancer and radiation treatment, they had to remove all his teeth and part of his jaw , he had all the same physical difficulties as yourself, he came through it, there were times when he didn’t believe it, but he used the team around him. I am sorry that you don’t have anyone you feel you can talk to, but you have everyone on this forum. Some on here are very experienced and can offer good advice and support

please as Hazel has said do not give in to it, don’t let it win, get the help to help you through this

  • Good evening Paul, please believe me when i say it will get better you just need help with the recovery of having cancer treatment, it seems as if you are not getting the aftercare that is needed, people like a dietician, speech and language therapist, meetings with you consultant etc. There is plenty of hope that lies ahead you just need professional help to overcome these negative feelings which most of us have been through one way or the other. I myself was on anti-depressants and had sessions with a Macmillian-trained counselor to help me get through the bad times. I myself cannot speak or eat due to cancer operations with the removal of my lower teeth, if your dentures do not fit then you should tell the restorative dentist as they will make new ones, this can happen because the radiotherapy is still very active. It will take a good six months to a year for a full recovery. Having cancer and coping with the side effects can be very difficult and hard to cope with, writing this post is a good step forwards and is sometimes the hardest thing to do as we can understand your emotions. Please seek help a.s.a.p with your G.P as i think it will be quicker than seeing your consultant, these side effects will go away in time and your weight will stabilise with help from a dietician. Hang on in there as life does and will get better. Take care and seek help.
