As being a cancer patient, who is now waiting for my biopsy results, to see if it has returned.. I'm wondering if any of you have the same problem of having appointment way out of town. I don't have a car and transport is basically a no go. I live in st Helens Merseyside. My appointments are always at. Aintree and the royal Liverpool hospital. I can't travel by public transport on my own

  • Hi and welcome.  My local hospital is 25 miles away...I live in the countryside.  If you have mobility issues then the hospital may be able to arrange hospital transport.  Alternatively there may be some community transport charities that can help get you to and from appointments.

  • Good evening Clace, Peter has given a great answer, most hospitals do have volunteer drivers taking patients to hospitals and taking them back home, some do even have a designated Taxi company that has an agreement with the N.N.S/hospital. Its worth making inquiries failing that maybe a friend or neighbor could help out. Hope you manage to get something sorted, take care.

  • I actually asked in oncology some years ago whether I could become a volunteer driver for them but they said they don't offer the service anymore, they just use taxis. They'd had them previously because I used them myself a few times but apparently they'd run into insurance problems of some sort.

  • Phone patient transport, my partner gets the service from Blackpool to the Christie's in Manchester so there should be a similar service in Liverpool. It's free with a local taxi driver or volunteer

  • On top of the advice already given this link may be useful.  You may need your GP or other health and social professional to do the referral but NHS Volunteers/RVS is another avenue to  explore
