Taking too many medications

My husband, who has cancer in throat, voice box, lungs and neck lymph nodes is not keeping to his med chart.

He keeps taking more meds than he should.

I made the chart to make it easier to manage the large amount of meds, different amounts per day and help keep track.

He is just taking them earlier and more frequent and when I try and say " you are taking too much" he gets angry and says he is in agony, and says he cant cope with the pain..

The chart is now all over the place and I can't keep track.

I can't get his meds ready for him anymore because he's already had too much. I feel it's illegal for me to administer the next dose I had previously worked out the timings for because he's already had them.

He says he's in pain and says "i need my next meds" but I am getting frustrated with him and when i say " you've had too much already" he gets annoyed and says " well I'm in agony, I can't wait any longer.

The home visit cancer nurse has changed his meds recently but he still thinks he can take what and when he wants.

What do I do?

  • Hi Mandy

I've answered in your other thread. It sounds as if you need to take this up with his nurse...to increase his Fentanyl at least. You say he is taking Paracetamol 6/7 times a day which is a dangerous overdose. On the other hand your poor husband is in the last weeks of his life. Perhaps he knows exactly what he's doing. The other thing I've mentioned is asking for some respite Hospice care maybe for a week just to let you reboot your energy and to enable his team to titrate his pain relief properly. Nobody who is dying should be left in pain. My heart goes out to you.

  • I am sorry but I dont like it being said he is in the last weeks of his life and I dont understand why that should make him know exactly what he is doing. This is something serious, not a subject to be decided by us, but by a real doctor. I dont know the setup where Mandy lives, but a real doctor should be called. Placebo pills maybe the answer. I have already sent her my doctors email and what other patients say about him on google. I hope she takes this seriously and writes to him.

  • I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to upset anybody. If Mandy is offended I’ll remove my post and apologise

  • Good evening Mandy, i would strongly advise you to speak to his dr or consultant about the pain, at times i have increased my painkillers if the pain gets bad but never gone to excess, pain management is very important and it sounds as if he needs stronger painkillers, i agree with Dani about paracetamol as they are a bit of a waste of time for bad pain and Fentanyl is a better and safer option. Take care.

  • Hi there.

    Thanks for your reply.

    Very helpful.

He had now got Fentanyl doubled by the specialist nurse. Added Pregablin, Dexamethasone and Ondesetron.

He has had a course of Immunotherapy and straight onto Radiotherapy. First course been over the past 5 days.

    Then 4 weeks rest.

We have had a letter from oncologist.

Not sure what it all means.

    Or the prognosis time scale.

T2 N1 M0 P16 Positive Squamous cell Carcinoma of Left tonsil.

T4 N2B M1 P16 Negative moderately Differentiated Squamous cell Carcinoma of the left Pyriform fossa.

    He also has Lung cancer.

If anyone has any idea of how bad this all is?????

I'm trying to be positive but they won't do any operations.

They were going to remove voice box but they now say they can't.

    That says it all really.

  • Hi Mandy. I hope your husband is more comfortable now.

I can at least tell you what the grading means

T2N1M0P16 means that the cancer is between 20-40mm in size and  has spread to one lymph node on the same side. of the neck

T4N2bM1P16 Means that the cancer has grown in to surrounding areas of the throat, is in more than one lymph node and has spread to his lungs.

P16 means it is HPV +

So sorry Mandy but it looks bleak, certainly not curable.

Did you do anything about some respite for yourself?

    Best wishes
