Hello,
I wasn't at all sure where to post so hope this is ok?
My son started with a lesion to his lower lip at about 6, started after he stopped a medication (so wondered if it was that) kept bleeding and very slowly increasing in size.
Fast forward he has seen a few Dr's in dermatology and they've took pictures he has it inside his left cheek red stain mark, lower lip, side of cheek, possibly in his left nostril (waiting on ENT to now be involved)
Dermatology want an mri-ultrasound-biopsies and are going to have a discussion with a vascular anomalies MDT to review his case as several consultants said it's all a bit abnormal.
They think some of it could possibly just be a port wine birth mark but they need to rule out a cancer on the lip.
My questions really are, is it possible for a child to get a cancer on their lip?
Is it normal that they want to put him to the top of the list priority wise but that's not till early next year when the theatre list is currently open again as they said it had been suspended due to the pandemic.?
Also if they thought there was a chance it was cancer is a few months wait the normal for a biopsy etc?
Any advice would much appreciated.
Thank You

Hi Mumto4 you must be worried and I can understand. None of us here are qualified to answer your medical queries but I can say that if cancer was really suspected your son would be on an urgent pathway with action well before the New Year. I would put all these questions to your son’s consultant. Take a list of questions to your next appointment and make sure that they explain everything to you. In my experience paediatric consultants are usually pretty good.
If you’re unhappy you can always request a second opinion. Consultants are pretty used to that scenario and you won’t be upsetting anybody.
Best wishes and I hope things are sorted quickly for you.

Hello,
Thank you for replying, yes we had a consultant appointment on Tuesday and 1 consultant wanted a biopsy and 1 wanted an MRI. I asked the most recent consultant on Tuesday if she thought it was cancerous and she didn't think it looked like any cancer she'd seen before but agreed it did look suspicious.
She said the quickest she could get him in was Jan or Feb 2022 so I just was hoping that meant it probably is nothing but not sure.
Thank You

How old is your son? I ask because head MRIs are long and stressful. A biopsy would give your consultant the information she needed more easily?

We head and neck cancer patients are used to MRI. They are very noisy and take half an hour or more of staying absolutely still in a confined scanner. I do think that if you disagree with what’s been suggested you go for that second opinion

Good luck. I hope things move faster for you. It’s awful having your own child ill like this and you only want to do your best.
