Hi everyone. Almost a year after my neck dissection my neck still feels quite swollen, lumpy and stiff, although mercifully it’s not painful and looks pretty much normal. I still have some underlying lymphodema, although it’s not too bothersome, and I am assuming the stiffness is a bit of fibrosis.
I do neck exercises and also massage it by hand with Bio Oil every day but was wondering if anyone had gone to the lengths of buying a neck massage machine and, if so, which one and did it make any difference?
Best wishes to you all,
M
Mark. Do please run this past your team. There are reports of carotid artery dissection ( a tear) using these and irradiated carotids are more fragile. One if my steps has a neck massager and it’s pretty violent.

Hi
I had my neck surgery done 6 weeks ago, at the same time I had a neck dissection. The stitches dissolved a couple of weeks ago, since then I have been massaging with bio oil
I have also done daily neck exercises 5 times a day when I do my jaw exercises. My scar feels painful when I massage it, but I’m assuming it’s early days. My neck doesn’t feel stiff, the scar feels a little bit tight. I’m doing shoulder exercises as well, so I don’t know if that has helped with neck stiffness
can you speak to GP or Cancer Nurse thieve physio to see if that helps

Hi Mark Be careful as Dani says ,I too have a small amount of fibrosis at back of my neck took over 2 years for it to surface .My ent consultants arranged for me to have physio consultation over the phone , I had several sessions and he told me the right way to do things .Worrh contacting you team . In my case fibrosis surfaces when I am chopping food stuff up in kitchen it’s the angle of what I am doing cause s the neck at the back on right side ( tumour side) easy solution get hubby to do it was physio first response ummm nope ..Also happens when I’m kneading bread etc.
Its worth a phone call no use me telling you what I have to do as we are all different .

I found a hot shower with one of those pulsating massage shower heads worked wonders on my neck. It freed it up enough for me to be comfortable in using the neck almost normally during the day - that in it's own right helped regain some persistent normality over he last 18 months or so.
