Can I please ask how long you all had your PEG tubes in for in total?

Getting a lot of mixed answers..some consultants have said it can be removed after 3 weeks of treatment if not used ..another seem to think it could poss be in for months, I know everyone is different but they seems like very different opinions

  • Mine was in for around four months first time around, though unused for probably the first month because it was in place before treatment started; then around five months second time. Three weeks sounds very optimistic to me but could happen I guess if you have no need for it, it's really not an issue having it in for longer though because it very quickly becomes routine and easy to deal with.

  • Good evening Bex1983, i agree with Mike, 3 weeks is quite optimistic with at least 3 months being the earliest. A lot depends on what area the cancer is in, are you having an operation or radio/chemotherapy as this will also determine the length of time the PEG is in for depending on the side effects. Some consultants put a PEG in religiously from day one in case it is needed to be used as a backup for feeding. Once they are fitted and settled down you should not get any hassle from it and they are so quick and easy to remove nowadays with a very small scar. Hopefully, you will not need to use it. Wishing you well, take care.

  • Hi Bex,

I've had mine for just over 6 months. I completely relied on it for 4 weeks post treatment. Had hoped we could discuss removing at 12 week clinic, but I lost a lot of weight in the few weeks before, so it stayed in as a precaution. Had my clinic last week and it is coming out next week. I barely notice it these days to be honest. I was told i needed 6 weeks without needing it. I think each trust is a bit different though.

I still have mine but am only 2 months post treatment. I was dependent on it during treatment and for a few weeks after. I was told I would need to not have used it for a month before they would consider taking it out. I have my next review with the doctor next week and plan to discuss it then. I won't have used it for a month at that point but I'm not sure if I feel 100% confident to get it taken out or not yet, since some of my medication is still a bit painful to take orally. So I reckon I will be guided by the doctor's suggetions.
