Hi, I just had a tumour (mucoepidermpidcarcinoma/minor salivary gland) removed from my hard palate. It still is extremely painful abd hard to swallow. Some of it seems to be the surgery itself, but also a lot of it seems to be the healing plate which is gripping ober my teeth with wires everywhere, abd constantly pulling at my teeth. The surgery was 1st July and so this is day 5. Is this to be expected? And how long might it last? It seems to be getting worse rather than better.
Thankyou
Hi Racheal
When I had my initial operation to remove my tumour from my palate I had a temporary obturator in place for healing with packing. I know it was not the most comfortable thing to have in and I did have pain after surgery caused by inflammation. That said I would contact your Cancer nurse and let them know your symptoms. I was told any worries to contact them, which I did and I just went in and they checked me over. Best to give them a call.

Thankyou. I think I will tomorrow. Problem is I can barely talk it hurts so much. I might have to get someone to do it for me!
I am sorry about this. Yes it is tough when we cannot speak, texting now certainly helps with this problem. I used to write as a way of communicating too. I hope you get your pain under control soon and someone to help.
take care

Good evening Rachel, i have not had this but have had a few surgeries due to mouth cancer, i would say its just things settling down after the operation, hopefully with some adjustment they can make your recovery less painful. Maybe you could ask for stronger painkillers as there is nothing worse than being in pain, great advice from Nicky about contacting your team as they will be only to pleased to help you. Wishing you all the best for your recovery, take care.

Thankyou Nicky and Chris. I got someone to speak to nurses for me. All sounds like its fairly normal, but they are going to get me more pain relief. They were all pretty short of information on what to expect beforehand, despite me asking! Nurses didn't know what was going on as no discharge papers yet. Still waiting for them myself! Anyhow, thankyou for your advice and reassurance.
Hi Rachael
Thanks for letting us know you are getting more pain relief and now feeling more reassured. It is always better to get things checked out as we don't know what is normal when we go through this. Glad you had someone to speak for you, this is so important when we can not speak for ourselves. Having a pen and paper handy and on speaker phone certainly helps when someone takes calls on my behalf when I struggle to speak. That way at least they can read my writing and get what I need to be said for me. I hope you feel more comfortable soon.
Best wishes
Nicky
Sorry for endless questions! Is it normal for it to start randomly bleeding 5 days in?
Hi Rachael. You might just have disturbed a scab but there’s no harm in contacting your CNS for reassurance
