RT Feeding Tube - Medication

I have seen a few references to being able to take your normal medication through your fitted feeding tube. Does this mean that you have to prepare your medication beforehand, i.e. crushing, liquidising, etc.?

Can all medication be supplied in liquid form for direct injection through the tube?

BTW - After the aborted attempt to have a PEG inserted, I am booked to have a RIG installed next Friday the 11th, I hope all goes well this time.

Thanks,
Bawbee

    Yes is the short answer.

One tip. If you are getting liquid paracetamol ask for the sugar free syrup NOT the dissolvable tablets. The effervescent tablets bloody hurt your mouth indescribably when you eventually decide to try swallowing it.

I hope the RIG op goes OK

  • It kind of depends. My first time around I was always able to take meds orally despite virtually all feed going in the tube so you may get aways with that if you're lucky. Second time I was totally nil by mouth so all meds went in the tube, most came in liquid form but one or two needed to be crushed and added to water.

  • My husband had a nose tube but eventually had a Rigg fitted. All his meds, food and drink go into it.

Mostly liquid but things can be crushed.

Just don't syringe in too fast. You will feel bloated or really full and feel sick. Give your stomach time to realise it's getting full.

And don't forget to flush with cooled boiling water.

    1. It helps to clear the tube of sticky meds

    2. It gives you much needed water too.

The answer is not a straight yes. My peg or pej bypasses the stomach and into the bowels and one cannot put anything into it.
