Hi All I am just going into my second month of using my nose feeding tube which I usually use before I go to bed and first thing in the morning and thats it. I tried some food yesterday and it nearly  made me throw up . I know I have to eat if the hose comes out or at least have some soup . Any tips advice would be appreciated as was hoping to be hose free next week All The Best Regards Min

  • Hi Min.
I asked for my tube to be removed at week 3  post treatment in discussion with the dieticians. I had started to orally drink the ensures and it wasn’t easy. When I gradually introduced bits of food it wasn’t a full meal it was for a good few weeks supplementary to the ensures I made sure I was getting at least 1800 calories from the ensures. Then gradually increased food to get to 50/50 . What you mustn’t do is reduce your calorie intake too soon or you will possibly hit the wall. You can try to eat while the n g tube is in but start with the ensures. Home made soups fortified with double cream. Ice cream full fat milk. I found poached eggs good. But as I said it’s a while before 3 square meals a day worked for me . It was a case if interspersing the ensures with bits of food. I found if I wrote my calorie intake dien I coujd see at a glance when I needed more ensures. For breakfast ready break really soggy or porridge worked for me but was always runny.

  • Hi Min. Good idea you can try things while it’s in ok not a rare rib eye and chips. ! But see if you can swallow the ensure type supplements. Your meds water etc

I had to show I could comfortably drink 150 mil of water snd safely swallow it.

  • Hi Hazel Yes it all started with my meds which played havoc with my throat and made me ill and put me in hospital for over a week. Well they said that I shouldn't have any issues swallowing  and I am improving my  daily water intake and having a hot drink also which can only help . All The Best Regards Min

  • Hi Marc. Just take it slowly. I had so much nausea throughout I did vomit up my first tube and I had it replaced the following day. I did it again a few weeks later and just made do without.

  • Hi Dani Yes I certainly will take it easy as I still feel weak Just moving about the house. Its funny because  in a moment of madness I did debate  going out. I have put that idea away for another week minimum. All The Best Regards Min

  • Yes please take it slowly, let the tube do the work until you are able to swallow properly , people try  to come of the feeding tubes to early and end up with dehydration and lack of nutrition. All the best for you recovery , take care.

  • Hi Chris2012 Thanks  Yes great advice let the tube do the work for you. Its only coming out of this that one realises how important the tube is and how it can assist in taking medication etc . All The Best Regards Min
