Which Fluoride Toothpaste?

Throughout my care i have asked my team about dental care, no one looked at my teeth before treatment due to COVID, I had to stop using my normal toothpaste as it hurt so much, I asked the team what to use, they recommended children’s toothpaste which I’ve been using since and it’s fine, they said I could go back to my normal toothpaste when it didn’t hurt, so this is what I’ve done but it has caused ulcers  and my tongue has been stinging since.  I’m really confused as the children’s paste is low fluoride but everyone on here says high is better. I was prescribed gelclair once 4 weeks post treatment but told it was a one off. I was only told this week (14 weeks post) that I should still be using a salt mouth rinse, I stopped after 8 weeks (no communication with them 8-14weeks).  Can someone recommend a toothpaste, mouthwash I can buy as the hospital won’t prescribe it. I don’t have an NHS dentist and doubt any will accept me now

Thank you Pamela

  • Try Oranurse toothpaste which has no flavour and no SLS

Bioxtra mouthwashes is gentle and has fluoride. You might get that on prescription.

Duraphat 5000 is the toothpaste to go for but it has the SLS that causes ulcers. It took me 18 months to be able to use that and even now I have to have a week off now and then and use Oranurse.

I go to the hygienist every three months to get a fluoride varnish

Thanks Dani, I’m assuming SLS is sodium lauryl  sulphate, I’ve just found that on my normal toothpaste, does this cause ulcers? It definitely would appear to in my case, I had only just got rid of them all lol

just ordered the oranurse, 3 for £10, not too bad

  • Good luck with the oranurse hope it helps with the ulcers.

I still use duraphat twice a day for the flouride, but the 'every day care' version of sensodyne is sls free too.

Dani- they have added methyl paraben to oranurse recently ... Does that concern you at all?

    Trev

  • No. Toxicity studies show it’s safe. There are other parabens that are banned but not methyl.

  • Sounds like you've been through a rough time with your dental care lately. First off, it's good to know that fluoride is a key ingredient in keeping our teeth strong and healthy. It helps prevent cavities and protect our enamel, the outer layers that strengthen teeth. So, using toothpaste with fluoride in it can be a good idea.As for the low-fluoride toothpaste you were using - it sounds like it wasn't the right choice for you, which is why it caused ulcers and stinging. I'd recommend trying out a toothpaste with a higher concentration of fluoride and see if that makes a difference.

Particularly after RT. It’s drummed into all of us and we are on high fluoride prescription toothpaste for life

  • Pamela - I’d personally try to forge ahead with the Duraphat as it provides the highest fluoride content you need to help protect your mouth/teeth. Maybe try using a really small amount then build up your resistance to it over a period of time?

I use the Cosodyl Daily Mild Mint Mouthwash which is still pretty caustic but what I did was mix it 50/50 with water to tone down the harshness. I can’t actually gargle with it as I’d drown because of the state of my throat so I just use it as a mouthwash/slosh if you know what I mean! I’m nearly 5 years down the line from treatment and my mouth is very sensitive so for the tenderness hasn’t really ever gone away so I think it’s getting a balance between using a product that you know is actually doing a job and judging that against the discomfort of actually doing it.

  • Hi. I use the Duraphat 2800 as the 5000 is too harsh for my mouth.

  • Sorry - I didn’t say; I use the 5000 as my Oncologist suggested it. Went with it based on his professional opinion and have managed reasonably well.

  • Can your GP prescribe anything or are you waiting to see what recommendation come up and then ask GP?
