Hello to everyone
I've had a recurring cough since November with head cold/sinusitis symptoms. I thought maybe I had tonsil stones as felt something was stuck in my mouth. I had a check with a mirror and phone torch and found a lump on my soft palate so I went to the GP who had to call in his colleague as he wasnt sure what it was - same as the senior GP, they found one of my nodes swollen and referred me to ENT. That was 4 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. I rang the GP 2 weeks ago to say I could see a change in the lump and no one rang back to suggest anything! I'm on long term sick due to Anxiety and depression so this is obviously not helping.
Should I be pushing to see ENT asap? I am worried it's something sinister but also dont want to take someone else's appt if it turns out to be nothing!
I do have other symptoms but they can be explained to other conditions but if they are all linked to this lump and its mouth cancer I could of been treated weeks ago.
I dont want to bother anyone yet I'm scared for my health!
Thanks for reading
X
Agree with Linda I'd go back and ask for an urgent referral Kelly; the target time to be seen by ENT under one of these is two weeks (if you're in England).
But if they give you one please bear in mind that 9 in every 10 people referred this way will not be diagnosed with cancer, there are many other causes for these lumps and bumps so try not to panic. Easy to say I know, specially as you already suffer from anxiety but you'll need to be really unlucky to be joining us on a long term basis, wish you all the best.
Afterthought, If you're a bit timid about forcing the issue do you have a confident/assertive friend or family member who could go to the GP with you for moral support and/or to put your case more strongly?
Metastatic SCC diagnosed 8th October 2013. Modified radical neck dissection November, thirty-five radiotherapy fractions with 2xCisplatin chemo Jan/Feb 2014. Recurrence on larynx diagnosed July 2020 so salvage laryngectomy in September 2020.
Keep on at the GP. If the GP has suspected that the area is cancerous then, in England, you should have been put on the "2 week cancer" pathway. If you look at my Bio you will see my early journey.
Initially I was not on the pathway until I had an ultrasound (that was not a long wait) that indicated some trouble. The following day I was on it! My GP was fantastic, as was the hospital. Most arrangements were made by phone with the confirmation letter arriving after the appointment!
I am fortunate that I've spent 2 decades working in hospitals and the cancer pathways so I know what should happen and am not afraid to ring up and get it sorted if I feel the admin processes are letting me down. I hope you will feel comfortable enough to do the same. Get key contacts in the hospital and use them if necessary.
Yes back to the GP
I was put on an urgent referral but two weeks later had heard nothing so I phoned GP to ask who I was being referred to then I got on to his secretary. Somebody in the office had downgraded my referral to not urgent. I went mad and asked for an explanation as to how somebody in an office could do that?
In desperation I arranged a private ent consult but got the nhs one through before that.
Sometimes you have to push these things.
Good luck

Good evening Kelly281702, im in total agreement with the others, your case is just as important whether its cancer or not cancer and as already stated it does not help your stress levels by keeping you waiting. I have been to appointments where it turned out to be nothing sinister but it put my mind at rest. You could phone the ENT department up as they should have received your GP's letter or e-mail as it will save time getting an appointment with your GP. Best wishes .
