my hubby finished chemo radiotherapy last Friday, day8   Or is it 9 now.

His neck broke down as they said it would, e have been using the hydrogel on a tube plus hydro gel dressyon top. This seems to have worked really well and there is clearly new skin covering the wound now, albeit very fragile.

My query is when do you stop putting the dressing s on, what cream  do you use afterwards and did anyone have any issues with the hydrogel once it was healed up? I ask because a caution in the literature re hydrogel is not to use it on good skin, but there is no guidance about when to stop using it???

I’ve put it back on after the usual cleaning routine, but thinking if it’s tbis much better again tomorrow what do it do???

has anyone else been in this stage with these types of gels and dressings?

thank you

L

  • You should of been given creams to use while having radio and you just carry on with those, I was given (by someone that works in a health shop) some MooGoo, based on udder cream that is used on cows and asked the radio nurse if it would be ok, it worked well and I didn't have any blisters though close to the end I was given some thing for open wounds as they were a bit worried about my trache wound (it had only just healed when I started radio).

    Hi Ron

Thank you, that’s interesting about the udder cream. We was just told to use e45 beforehand, just wondering what people’s experience was with the hydrogel which we were given when the neck broke down.

    Thanks again

  • Udder cream is the best hand cream you can get, the only problem is it used to be a bit sticky and didn't go in very well, I used to be a Shepherd and used it allot at lambing, the MooGoo is refined and goes in easily.

  • Hi Bluebird6 , I have not used this and its all new to me although my skin did not break down that much , if you think its done its job then maybe leave it of for a few hours as it might help dry the area up , you can always put it back on if it changes . Good luck ,all the best .

  • Hi Bluebird,

like your husband I had base of tongue cancer and finished my treatment 3 1/2 years ago. My burns were quite bad, from ear to ear and the tip of my chin to my chest. Some areas were worse than others and I was prescribed Flamazine cream, that is the cream initially applied to Simon Weston's burns in the Falklands I believe. The Flamazine cream really helped and from memory worked quite quickly. Once the worst of it was over and the skin healed I just used a moisturiser to keep the skin soft. I don't remember using a dressing, I think I was told to just keep it open. Maybe asking about Flamazine is worth a go.  Good luck.

    Hi Clive

thank you for your reply, gosh sounds like you had some serious burns to deal with there, hoping you are well now?

its helpful to hear your experience, I will ask about the flamazine and see if we can have that as it’s been mentioned by a couple of people, we weren’t given that so have had to use the hydrogel and dressings we were given so far. I just don’t know when to stop using them and perhaps moving into to something else, but will ask this week.

Thanks again, hope things are good for you now.

    Hi Hazel

tgank you for your reply, good to hear your experience, your burns sound very bad and must have been painful, my husbands seem to be healing quickly in that there is a lovely layer of new pink skin covering it now.

I will check and see what they suggest, we were given hydrogel and allevyn dressings and advised to use those, which seem to have done the job, just don’t want to over do it!

    thanks again

    Hi Chris

thank you, good to hear your thoughts, I might give that a go tomorrow, I was mulling it over, as you say can always put it on after a couple of hrs if it starts to look as if it needs covering again. I’m just a bit nervous about the hydrogel although it’s done a fantastic job at healing the open broken down areas right up, it’s a question of what it does to normal skin, which some literature says it can be damaging to normal skin so you have to keep it the wound. But now the wound is covered with skin, albeit very new looking, I don’t want the hydro gel to damage it, there is literally no information about when you stop using it. I will leave it fir an he or two tomorrow and try and ring the hospital to see if I can get any advice. Sadly we have had a very limited service from the nurse specialist, so I’m not hopeful about getting any answers from there but we will see.

    Thanks sgain
