5 and half weeks ago

i had my first gastroscopy and biopsies , told straight away I had a malignant tumour. I’ve had gastroscopy and biopsies repeated, CT scan, PET scan, lung function and echocardiogram and finally an appointment with consultant to discuss results. Then out of the blue a phone call today booking an MRI scan. Will the consultant need these results before he can discuss a plan with me? One of my children gets married soon and I want to be there!

  • Hi. It is always the most anxious time whilst going through the diagnostic stage and everybody who has been through this will tell you that. When you have been given a treatment plan then those of us who have had similar treatment route  will be able to advise you further. We can't answer the question you have posed as we are not medics but obviously your team feel the need for an MRI scan in your particular case  to further assist in developing their plan. My team were very accommodating in helping me align my treatment with significant family events and no doubt your team will be as well. My best wishes to you

  • Hi there, i was diagnosed aug 11th immediately after endoscopy with a lower oesophagus malignant tumour. Since then ive had ct scan, then pet scan and also an mri. Every scan i have had finds something new so i totally understand your feelings. I am now having a laporoscope procedure on monday morning to look at an area on my diaphragm and for staging. This feels like it has been an eternity of waiting for results and more tests but im sure it is what is necessary so we can proceed with the correct treatment. In my experience guys and st thomas hospital needed my mri results before going forward to discussions about treatment. Id speak to your team re the wedding plans as im sure they will accomodate.

  • Hi there. Different hospitals seem to go about things in different ways. My husband had his first consultation with the surgeon before he'd had any scans etc, based on the findings from the endoscopy. He was told the likely treatment plan then (but no idea of timings) and had a laparoscopy soon afterwards so that the surgeon could 'have a little look', as he put it. Numerous scans and other tests followed.

His treatment (pre-op chemo) started about a month later.

Hopefully you have contact details for an upper GI nurse? It might be helpful to have a chat with them so that you know what to expect and when things might happen and also you can explain the situation regards the wedding. Best of luck to you.

  • Thank you -.surgeon feels I should be ok to manage part of the wedding, oncologist thinks I may feel too ill. I have spoken with my son who has said it’s been ne day mum, if I look at the big picturI’d rather you were here for my future children rather than risk catching an infection at my wedding. It’s been emotional but we’ll just have to play it by ear and see on the day. Anyway we’ll plan photo shoot and everyone will have to dress up again if I can’t make the day Blush
my treatment starts tomorrow, FLOT plus immunotherapy, then surgery , then FLOT and immunotherapy again, then immunotherapy. I’m very hopeful of a good Outcome.

  • Hi Karen like you Ive had multiple scans and appointments and now have a plan. Everyone I’ve seen has been lovely and explained everything well. I may or may not make the wedding but I’ll get my photos when I do feel well. Treatment starts tomorrow- scary but the first step to a good long life Muscle

  • Thank you Relaxed️ Everyone I’ve spoken to has been extremely supportive and positive, after a discussion with my son, I may or may not make the wedding but we’ll arrange a photo shoot for when I’m feeling well enough  - my son  is more than happy to do this Blush

Treatment starts  tomorrow, first step to recovery Muscle

  • So pleased for you that you can still have photos when you are feeling well and hoping you are actually feeling well enough to actually attend even if only for a short while.

Good that your treatment is starting soon. its been around 10weeks since i was first diagnosed at endoscopy and i still dont have a treatment plan as waiting on results of test after test is taking so long. I have been told that im not a candidate for surgery currently as apparently i struggled with respiratory during my laporoscope procedure.

Good luck tomorrow hope all goes well
