Hello,

My mum is 84 and diagnosed 2 weeks ago after an endoscopy. Was in hospital as she was so weak and hadn’t been able to keep down food, or even swallow much over the last couple of months. Since being in hospital, she has been able to eat and mostly keep down food.
My question is about how will this progress and what to be ready for, as she is not fit to have any treatment. They want to release her as she has no medical symptoms currently. I have no experience of this illness with anyone else, so no idea what it will be like/timeline of what to expect.

  • Hi Mags42. Sorry to read about your mum and hope we can help you in some way. You say your mum is not fit to have treatment. Why? Has she just become weak through not eating or is there some other cause. If the former then the hospital should be dealing with her nutrional need. Is she at a major cancer centre or a local hospital? I presume she is under an oncologist and this non treatment opinion has come from them.If not make sure you are dealing directly with whoever is making the decisions on her behalf. You ask how this will progress. We are not medical people and can't answer that question. We can only point you in the right direction to help you through the process. Battling this cancer is a fight but it can be done and that includes people of your mums age- I am one if them. My best wishes to you both.
