Hi my name is Sara and my mum has just been diagnosed with oesophagus cancer. Fortunately it is just in this area. She is really struggling to eat anything apart from soups and the fortisip drinks from the hospital. She has lost over a stone in weight since all this began and needs to gain weight before her treatment starts. Does anyone have any advice on what she can eat which will make her gain weight. Thank you in advance x

  • Hi,

    High calorie foods are the key. Some that I used when swallowing was difficult include;

    • full fat milk and yoghurts
    • banana smoothies with full fat milk, ice cream, double cream and even added milk powder
    • custard (M&S do a nice one)
    • Soft scrambled eggs with a splash of double cream and, if she can manage it, some added grated cheese
    • Mashed potato with butter, milk and added gravy

    Your mum should be referred to a hospital nutritionist who might provide other suggestions. CB

    Cool Blue

  • I was on soups and yoghurts for the first week after being diagnosed with oesophageal cancer back in August, and it was awful tbh, but i hope your Mum might be able to manage some of the things that cool blue has posted above which is what i now have and has stablized my weight.

  • Thank you very much and I hope you are doing ok x

  • Thanks. Just had my first cycle of immunotherapy and chemo 2 weeks ago which went really well. Will have my 2nd cycle next Wed. My cancer is also confined to the tube and hasn't spread elsewhere which is good.
