Hello everyone, total newbie here!
I've just been diagnosed with Barrett's esophagus with high grade Dysplasia and Hiatus Hernia.
I've had 3 endoscopy tests, the most recent this week with more biopsies taken. I'm so confused what I should expect to happen next, I'm told that the results will be 4-6 weeks which seems crazy to have to wait so long. The specialist at hospital has mentioned ablation but had this last endoscopy to take a further look.
I'm taking Omopazale daily, I feel nauseous everytime I eat and only really feel comfortable when laying down flat. I've lost weight and constantly feel tired.
I'm trying to be positive especially when around my wife and family as they worry.
Should I be worried? I'm getting no support from the hospital at the minute.
Any advice would be gratefully accepted
Sorry to hear you’re going through this it’s not easy but from experience the one thing you have to be good at is waiting !! Until you get a diagnosis you probably won’t get any support but please try to stay positive I know it’s easier said than done ! Tricia x
So sorry to read about your concerns and diagnosis delay which does seem extraordinary. Have you been in direct contact with the Upper GI specialist nurse? I am sure that he/she will help you. They are there to support both patients and their families during this process. I wish you all the best in this difficult time.
No, i haven't spoken to anyone apart from the specialist before last week's endoscopy which confirmed the barretts and Hernia. Just waiting for the result of the biopsies, not sure I should contact them just yet
I had Barrett’s esophagus and I hiatus hernia and not able to eat vomiting etc but until the biopsy came back as cancer I was given little support and no GI nurse but as soon as the results came back which did take a while and cancer was confirmed then everything kicked in scans ultrasound endoscopy laparoscopy etc !
I have a few issues with feeling full after eating, nauseous all the time, feeling tired and losing weight. I'm taking Omopazale to stop any acid build up. Just a case of waiting for the 2nd lot of biopsies results after the 1st showed the high grade Dysplasia.
I have my fingers crossed for you and hope you get the results soon x
Hi
Sorry to hear you’re going through this .The waiting is terrible isn’t it .My mum (85) is currently waiting for biopsy results after a diagnosis of Barrett’s and gastritis in her stomach .We have been waiting five weeks .No communication from the hospital whatsoever ! Phoned her GP last week only to be told he would have to ‘read up on what’s been going on with Mum ‘ as he’d no idea !!!
She was prescribed Omeprazole at the hospital to take morning and evening and advised to eat a low fat diet .She is now under seven stone in weight but she has always been slim .She too feels nauseous after eating and feels tired , (she’s putting that down to her advanced years) .We were told because of her age and other health issues she would probably only be monitored for the Barrett’s .We are chasing the results up this week as we need to know what we are dealing with .Unfortunately this is the third time in three years that we have had to deal with oesophagus issues with three family members , and each year the waiting process seems to become longer and the communication between GP , Hospital and Patient is becoming worse too .
Best wishes
J
Hope she gets answers soon, you'd think they'd want to keep everyone upto date with the process wouldn't you.
Yes you would, but it’s probably a sign of the crisis within the NHS at present .
Hope you receive some answers too very soon .
