Mum's recent diagnosis

My mum has been struggling to eat for the last few weeks, bringing up a white frothy fluid, and eventually after getting a CT scan last Wednesday they have advised that she has a lesion at the bottom of her oesophagus. She also has a lump on her chest which they say may be a lesion. My mum was on her own after the scan and they advised her that it was terminal.

A doctor from an upper GI team met with us on Thursday and advised that they could insert a stent to open her gullet and allow her to eat better. The doctor did not mention the lesions other than to say that they didn't feel they could do a biopsy as my mum may bleed too much. The stent was fitted on Friday and I now feel like we are in complete limbo, I have no idea what happens next.

She is still in the local hospital, is now extremely breathless, which she wasn't last week, and today has been told that she has a low white blood cell count and that they will put her on a nebuliser.

The doctor from the upper GI team (and the team I believe) are based in another hospital and have not been back to see her since the stent was fitted. I am constantly asking what the next steps are and not getting anywhere, we are getting so frustrated and it's impacting my mum's health further as she is in a hospital that don't seem that concerned with what is going on with her.

  • Hi I feel you need to track down the contact number for the Upper GI team at the " other hospital" they should be able to give you a Clinical Nurse Specialist name and number that you liaise with about your mother. Its not good enough that you feel left up in the air about your Mum.Im afraid you will have to kick ass and throw tantrums to get the attention but go for it.
