Mum's chemo no longer working

Hey All - I've been in the group for a whole but not posted. I really appreciate reading everyone' s posts. My mum was first diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in the summer of 2022 when she was 58. She had the FLOT chemo and operation followed by more chemo. She was ok from March 2023 but was told it had spread to her lungs in January of this year. She's had 5 rounds of chemo but was told today that they are going to stop it because a) it's damaging her heart and b) it's not working and the tumors have grown in the last couple of months.

I feel devastated. I'm 42 and I really thought my mum would outlive me because she's always been so full of life. I just wanted to share really. Does anyone have experience of what it can be like when chemo is stopped?

Sending a big hug to all who need one right now. Cancer sucks!

  • Thank you. What makes it harder is that my wife and I moved last year so we are now 450 miles away! Mum's got another consultation in 3 weeks, so hopefully we'll know more then and I can make a plan to take some time off work. x

  • Hi my mum was diagnosed nov 2023 was told they cudint operate was given chemo and done well up until 3 weeks ago her tumour started bleeding we have been told today that there is no more they can do for her x

  • So sorry to hear that Catherine. My mums tumour is bleeding too. Can I ask…have they given you some idea of how much longer your mum has?  My mum was given a year, just 3 months ago but I can’t see her making it to Christmas, if I’m honest. Cry . It’s all so hard, watching someone you love slowly slipping away .  Sending you hugs  x

  • No they haven't given a time scale I'm not sure I'd like to no anyway mum was in hospital 3 weeks ago had to have 5pints of blood we got her home for 3 days then bk in sun morning they did a scope yesterday and said the tumour has took over the hole esophagus now so that's it really my mums lost a lot of weight she is just 7stone now sending love to u x

  • It’s all so sad.  My mum is due to be given another CT scan in the next few days to assess what’s going on inside. I fear, like your mum, that her tumour has grown and is now filling her oesophagus. They have talked about the possibility of putting in another stent but whether they will still think it’s feasible after the scan, I don’t know. Right now, all we can do is love and care for them as best we can eh? Hugs, Diane x
