Hi, I’m new here. My dad’s been feeling ill for a while now, loss of appetite and losing weight, pain in his back and knee, I’ve been asking him to go to the GP for weeks but he’s never been one for doctors so refused. His partner made him go on Monday and they sent him straight to A&E. He’s been in hospital ever since and yesterday they said they wanted to test for cancer. Today they’ve told him that it’s not good news - Oesophageal cancer and it’s spread to his bones.
Don’t know much more than that other than they’ve told him that it’s not curable but is treatable.

He currently lives in Ireland (Republic of) but wants to come here for treatment to be near me and my brother. I don’t even know if that’s possible at the moment from an NHS point of view.
Everyone seems to be in shock and my brother looks broken. Dad already seems to have decided that that’s it for him now, that it’s all over and he’s terrified. Just feeling rather overwhelmed by it all.

  • Hi Tepid Squirrel

It is all very overwhelming, I was diagnosed with Oesophagal cancer this June. I have had 4 rounds of chemo FLOT and I'm scheduled for an op on December 29th to remove the tumour with 4 more rounds after recovery. They told me it's treatable but it is hard to take it all in not knowing what the future will be like. Try  to stay positive and be reassured the cancer team will do everything they can. The chemo Is difficult with many side effects but I just took it one day at a time.

There is lots of help available for those with cancer and the people looking after them I have found them amazing.

Get all the help you can and I wish you all the best

  • Thank you Dean, I really appreciate the response. Dad’s just had a biopsy and the next step is to wait for the results of that before we can do anything else.
He’s still undecided as to where to have his treatment but the doctors are leaning on him to stay where he is.
I hope all keeps going well for you. All the best.
