Hello

I hope its okay to post here. I have an appointment in a week's time for a gastroscopy, so I don't have a diagnosis of cancer but I am preparing myself for bad news.

I have a question about the gastroscopy. Is it likely that I will be given a diagnosis there and then? I know further investigation would be needed if they do find anything suspicious but will I at least have an idea of the direction things are going in?

I have found reading posts on here very helpful already as I want to be well informed.

  • Hi, I had on my gastroscopes report at the time  ‘probably malignant’, which was confirmed with the consultant who did it before I left the hospital. She just knew, but said wait for the confirmation. I then had lots of other tests while waiting for the confirmation to come back.. but it was fully confirmed twelve days later.
    good luck x

  • Hi Elastigirl.

Welcome to the forum. Let's hope your result means you won't be on here to long.

I had a gastroscopy on march 20th this year and was told immediately that they had taken six biopsies for further examination and that it looked like cancer. I nearly fell over. Unlike you I had never even thought of cancer. I thought it may be a hernia or an ulcer or some form of irritation/inflammation.

    Best regards

  • Thank you so much GeoFerret!

Your reply and diary are really helpful. I have to go out soon so I haven't read all of your diary yet but I will.

I hope your post op recovery is going well and you're enjoying this lovely weather we've been having.

As you can imagine I am rather keen to find out what we are dealing with here! Interestingly enough I am going to have a sleep test for sleep apnea because I have been SO tired and falling asleep all the time. That's being going on for ages but its been getting worse.

Thanks again for your reply. Very helpful.

    Very best wishes

  • Thank you so much LilliePad (love your name!

Sometimes I have used Waterlily as a username/password at various times....love waterlilies!)

It is good to know that I may soon know what's going on. My husband is coming with me as I'm having a sedative, so I am glad he will be there.

Hopefully I am overreacting but on the other hand I have a close friend who is a retired doctor and I confided in them that I suspect cancer (having told them about symptoms and appts). They said they had wondered the same but would not say anything unless I raised it myself.

    So....watch this space.

    Very best wishes

  • I had an endoscopy and was told when I woke up that there was a lump in my oesophagus that looked malignant. I hope all goes well for you in this journey

  • Thank you UnicornD. Much appreciated.

    Very best wishes

  • I thought I would just update about the gastroscopy I had today. The procedure was okay. Well, put it this way I don't remember anything after the sedative! The throat spray was ok. A strange taste that was all.

Inflammation in oesophagus and stomach and a small hiatus hernia. Dr took biopsies. He says on his report 'mild oesophagitis' and 'More pronounced pre plyoric gastritis which may well be bile reflux'.

So, reassuring up to a point, but it seems to leave a bit of room for the biopsies to come back with something more concerning. I'll wait for the results and ask questions after that.

I do want to be proactive (if necessary) as I am sure I have come across people in my Internet searches who were told 'its just this or that' but maybe that was before an endoscopy was done.

Anyway, I wanted to let you know as people have been so helpful on here.

  • Hi, Fingers crossed for you.  Glad that it all went well so far xx
