Hi, my dad was diagnosed a few weeks ago after starting to struggle to eat. Since being diagnosed he has struggled more and more with food and a lot of mucus (sorry too much information but I’m sure everyone’s used to it). Has anyone else experienced this? He’s seeing the consultant on Tuesday but I’m so worried as he’s hardly eating or sleeping due to constantly coughing. Any advice welcome
He needs either medication to control the mucus or a stent. This is very hard. I hope what I say isn’t upsetting. It’s only my experience. My 89 year old dad was coughing up clear (and later a little bloody) mucus continually (wretching/coughing) and could not eat or even drink a sip of water. He had to go to hospital and was persuaded by his gastro team to have a stent and though it gave him more weeks of eating and drinking it was not, for him, very comfortable. He said he’d not have chosen to have it if he’d known what the procedure was and what it felt like afterwards (the pain of the fitting of the stent settled a bit after a few days, but it was always a little uncomfortable). But he would have died earlier without it because he couldn’t eat or drink at all. (My dad had stage 4 oesophageal cancer, terminal. If your dad is at an earlier stage or younger it may be very different for him.)
Hi Fran, such a difficult way to see your husband pass away. I feel you, I really do. You were helpless to do any other than you did. You were there helping until the end. His journey in life might be over. But your memories can live on through you
Good bless to you and your family.
Regards Geo.
