Hi, so pleased to have found these forums. Feel so helpless. My sister was diagnosed with stage 4 oesophageal cancer about a month a go. It has spread to her lungs and liver. We are in total shock as this came from no where. The only symptoms she had was a swollen belly and a bit of heartburn. She was sent for an ultrasound scan as they thought her swollen belly was due to problems with her ovaries. They noticed spots on her liver and she was told she may have liver cancer. She then had a CT scan and was told she had stage 4 oesophageal cancer which had spread. She is devastated. They said she may only have months to live. She is only 57. She is now waiting to see if they can do any treatment. So far the care she has had has been poor. I am her big sister and just want to help her.
My sister is in the exact same boat but only 36. There are some brilliant treatments available now and many people continue to live long lives with stage 4 cancer. Hopefully your sister will be eligible for imunotherapy, which is a game changer for cancer treatment. Make sure you ask about trials too. Maggies have been a huge help to us. Best wishes to you and your sister x
Hi Gemma, a sad welcome aboard. I have OC too. Not as advanced as your sister, just started chemo.
No one ever wants to come to this sort of forum. However, introduce your sister and get her in here is good to talk and be able to find out stuff from others with the same condition. No bullshit Google answers then...lol.
It's already been said but they've come on leaps and bounds. Who knows what might be available.
Take care.
Geo.
Hi, thank you for the replies. My sister went to see the Oncologist at James Cook hospital and was given a bit of hope . She has been offered some chemo starting in about 10 days time. Without treatment she will only live a few months but with the chemo if it works she may have up to a year to live. Best news up to now. Praying the chemo works for her. Has anyone experienced bad side effects from the chemo? We are trying to build her weight up a little she has lost over a stone in weight in the last 3 to 4 weeks. Thank you
Hi Gemma,
Good news indeed about your sister being offered chemo. Unfortunately each individual reacts differently to chemo and which type of drugs are being used.
Yes she will have side effects and her oncologist and specialist nurses will be able to give you advice on what these might be.
At the time of treatment they normally give you tablets to take home to fight off expected side effects like the runs or feeling sick, etc.
A years life expectancy isn't long but I think they give you worst case scenario. With chemo that could be a few years. Who knows what advances they will make by then.
Have you asked about immunotherapy or being involved in any trials?
Keep strong and positive for your sister. Being leaned on isn't easy either. Take care off yourself too.
Regards
Geo.
