Hi my son(53) was diagnosed last June had chemotherapy + radiotherapy and then had the operation 8th December. Lots of set backs, but was finally discharged back to our house as he lives on his own on 9th January.

He has a feeding tube by night and has been on a soft diet, mainly pasta, soups, mashed potatoes, Just sent a sheet with dietary suggestions through the post, but was told last week he could now try other things, but no suggestions as to what!!

So what do people progress onto? He often feels sick, and is reluctant to try things, any advice would be really helpful

  • Hi

Sorry to hear it has not been straightforward for your son, I had complications and spent a month in hospital which I know was hard on my family.

in my case I was advised to start on a soft diet and then I was told I could eat anything I liked as long as you can swallow it. I believe the soft diet is to assist healing but once you get past a certain point there is little damage you can now do so just eat.

I also often feel sick and annoyingly this can be worse after I have eaten so I eat a few tic tac mints or similar which helps me. if you, or your son, has contact details it’s worth speaking to the dietitian again but fingers crossed it’s the same as my experience and he can eat anything.

it is really hard adjusting after the operation I have/am struggling with eating but as my doctor pointed out this is a long term recovering so not to put pressure on myself to rush. I am assured things will and do get better.

    I hope that helps

  • Hi Jacob ,

How long were you on your soft diet?

  • Hi

I was advised about a week after leaving hospital.  I am having some difficulty swallowing so I am following the soft diet just so I can eat.
